Women's Collection from Marketing to Counter-Marketing
Project SULT
Abstract
Outlines objectives for various R&D projects, including Project SULT, Horizon, QC, NSS, Beta-90, and OMEGA. Gives marketing objectives, product descriptions/technologies, timlines and projected external affairs impact for each project. Identifies Project SULT as developing ultra low tar products for current FFLT smokers; Horizon as developing a cigarettes with imporoved aroma; QC as developing paper technology to enable a 50% reduction in 'tar' from the lit end; NSS as reducing visible sidestream smoke and odor; BETA-90 as adressing smoke chemistry, biological activity and ETS; and OMEGA as developing a smokeless, non-burning tobacco product.

PROJECT SULT
R&D/Marketing Objective:
Develop satis in ultra low tar products for current FFLT smokers.
Product Description/Technologies:
1. TASTE - Modified Resconstituted Tobacco Sheets
- Tobacco Extract applied to filters
- Reaction Flavors
2. DRAW - Calcium Carbonate/Tobacco Reconstituted Sheet
- High pressure drop, Low efficiency filters
3. BURN RATE - Paper technology
- Tobacco burn rate modifications
4. SATISFACTION - Nicotine fortification
- Nicotine levulinate
Global Timing:
Develop 5 mg. SULT for market introduction 1992
Develop 1 mg. SULT for market introduction 1992
External Affairs Impact:
Froggart advoc s low tar with high nicotine. Surgeon General states that
nicotine is n addic ``' ubstance.
0 Nicotine fortification

HORIZON
R&D Obiective:
Develop a cigarette that addresses the consumer demand for more pleasant
sidestream aroma.
Marketing Objective:
Introduce a brand that improves cigarette aroma and reduces the social guilt
associated with smoking.
Product Technologies:
Driving technology is the use of aroma precursors, particularly EVG, which when
applied to cigarette paper yields, on combustion, a pleasant aroma in the
sidestream smoke.
Status:
Horizon was introduced into test market 5/90 in Atlanta. Retail audit SOM
increased to 1.41 at Week 8 and decreased to 1.13 at Week 10 as retail
promotion decreased. Share of smokers has held at 0.7 since Week 6 with
Horizon accounting for 80% of their purchases (Percent Requirement Satisfied).
,YeJCL .c7tef.Jj:
Development of 85 mm menthol and non-menthol styles is in progress.
Prototypes in test with results due 9/90.
Address transition issues (PRO, Logo Repeat, Draft, Packaging).
Coordinate EVG production.

I
PROJECT QC
R&D Objective:
. Develop cigarette paper technology to provide a conventionally blended cigarette
with greater than 50% reduction in 'tar' from the lit end of the cigarette.
Marketing Objective:
. Address consumer social quilt concerns by providing an added benefit of less
visible smoke from the lit end of the cigarette.
Product TechnoloQV:
. A low sidestream cigarette paper containing magnesium hydroxide has been
developed by Ecusta which reduces the amount of sidestream 'tar' emitted from
the lit end of a conventionally blended cigarette by 55% versus Marlboro Lts.
Status:
. 100 mm menthol and non-menthol prototypes have been developed which yield
51 - 55% reduction in sidestream 'tar' versus Marlboro Lts. 100.
. Concept Identified Consumer Testing indicates that 60% of FFLT and ULT
smokers would definitely or probably buy the product after smoking a carton.
Next Steps:
. An A&A or TPT test will be fielded to determine SOM potential. 11 /90
. Regional Manufacturing Start-up. 1/91
. Regional DTS (40% U.S.) 4/91
External Affairs Issues:
. Product will reduce ETS particulate but not gas phase.
. Advertising may illicit implied health claims which cannot be substantiated to
deter external critics.

Project NSS
R&D Objective:
Develop cigarettes with conventional taste, ash and burning
characteristics which exhibit maximal reductions to visible
sidestream smoke and odor.
Marketing Objective:
Address smokers' social andpersoal concerns by providing benefits
of no visible smoke a d reduced odor and irritation from the lit
end of the cigarette.
Product Technologies:
Option 1
A conventional tobacco blend wrapped with two paper layers. The
inner layer contains 40-50% charcoal. The outer paper is a
conventional cigarette wrapper treated with cellulose to obtain a
very low porosity.
Option 2
A mixture of tobacco and non-tobacco filler wrapped with a single
paper layer. The filler contains charcoal and comprises 30-50% of
the blend. The paper is a conventional cigarette wrapper treated
with cellulose to obtain a very low porosity.
Status/Next Steps:
Performance/feasibility assessment - 1990.
Consumer testing/product and materials refinement - 1991
Test market - 1992.
External Affairs Issues:
Non-tobacco ingredients used in both design options
Health claims implied by the lack of visible smoke and odor
Product reduces visible portion of lit end smoke but not the gas
phase
MS CO deliveries may be higher than other products of same 'tar'

BETA-90
R&D Objective:
To Develop a New Cigarette that Simultaneously
1. Approaches ALPHA in addressing alleged cigarette issues
(Smoke Chemistry, Biological Activity, ETS)
2. Provides the ritual, taste, and satisfaction of traditional brands
3. Can be manufactured on existing equipment
Critical Technologies:
Tobacco Replacement Filler Materials
-- To reduce the amount of tobacco burned
Smoke-simulating Aerosol
-- To provide apparent smoke and easy draw
-- Biologically Innocuous
Low Biological Activity Tobaccos
-- Processed forms: Extracts, Deproteinized, etc.
-- Inherently Low (Type, Cultural Conditions)
Segmented Blends
-- Concentrate tobacco in lighting end
Reconstituted Tobaccos with Extenders
Filters
Gas phase reduction

Status:
Exploratory Prototype Development Stage
Significant Reductions in Biological Activity/Smoke Chemistry Demonstrated
A Number of Approaches Under Investigation:
All tobacco <
TO
> all replacement filler
. Final Prototype Selection Dependent on Best Balance of:
Taste/Acceptance < > BA/SC < > External Environment
Next Steps:
Develop Prototypes for Range of Options (12/90)
. Determine Marketability (7/91)

OMEGA
R&D Objective:
To Develop a Product with the Following Features:
-- Smokeless: Mainstream and Sidestream
-- NO tar, NO CO, NO ETS, NO Controversial Compounds
-- Non-burning
-- Impact, Sensation, and "Satisfaction" of Conventional Cigarettes
Critical Technologies:
Non-burning Heat Source to Provide 100°C, 8 Minutes
Product Design and Components
-- To permit efficient heating of the tobacco
