LATIN AMERICA Monthly Activity Shipments for July were 13.1 million units vs. 6.9 for July '90. Y-T-D sales stand at 66.8 million units,12.8% or 7.6 million units ahead of the same period last year. Sales for July were very good in all countries in the Latin America Region with Bermuda placing the largest military order PM has ever received from the island. Mike Madden and Bruce Coombs worked Bermuda in early July securing the order which included Marlboro Medium. Medium has also been ordered by the Navy in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. PROMOTIONS July promotions included on carton coupons and VPR's as well as 25 cents on pack VPR's. Marlboro T-Shirts, poker dice, playing cards and coffee mugs were also used on various carton and pack promotions. Marlboro and Cambridge lighters were continued in Panama on both pack and carton promotions depending on location and outlet. In Puerto Rico, Marlboro lighters were free with 2 pack purchases in the Roosevelt Roads and Ft. Buchanan USO's. Our anually sponsored Bermuda womens and mens softball tournaments were held during the 4th of July week. All the womens teams wore various Virginia Slims T-Shirts and hats while the mens teams wore other P.M. branded T-Shirts along with Marlboro hats. Over 240 sailors played in the tournament while many more were in the stands during the week long double elimination tournament. P.M. also helped with the cost of a fireworks display on the 4th. POLITICAL INFORMATION Nothing to report this month. SHIPS AFLOAT Navy ships (tax paid) sales were down 10.9% for July with 9.6 million units sold compared to 10.7 million units for the same month in 1990. Tax paid sales for the year are down 22.7% with a total of 44.6 million units sold compared to 60.3 million units for 1990. Tax free sales for the year are up 5.5% which is a result of the Gulf conflict. Now that most ships are back in their U.S. ports, sales of tax paid cigarettes should increase over the coming months. - 11 -
