Abstract

Intent of letter of September 2, 1987, on which Jim Glenn and David Stone commented, was to point to anomalies in scientific literature that should lead to a revision of the notion that smoking is responsible for unchanging number of deaths. Thus, the letter did not deal with, among others, funding to CTR.

Council for Tobacco Research-US&, Inc. 900 Third Avenue New ~ock, N¥ 10022 Dear Bill:: Thank you foc sending me the comments of Jim Glenn and David Stone that were directed to some of the documents accompanying my letter of September 2, 1987 to you. Their. comments are very interesting and I hope you will let them know that I greatly appreciate the time they devoted to studying this matter. I am afraid, however, that the accompanying documents on radon overwhelmed the central thrust of my letter, which did not emphasize radon except as it may represent an example of a number of relatively recent anomalies in the literature. In other words, I should think the oft-repeated notion that smoking is responsible foe some unchanging number of deaths Has to be revised as more non-tobacco culprits or even some protective effects of smoking emerge in the scientific z~tecatuce. My letter sought some profundities on the generic issue rather than on the radon controversy itself. I want to oe clear. My letter did not: - relate to ~unding o~ research by CTR; focus on radon except as it is an example of several SUCh surprises; suggest that CTR interpose itself in the radon controversy oc in anything else; oc suggest that CTR put itsel~ in the position of cationa£izing radon, lung cancer and smoking. ~ letter was not inCenaed in any wa~ to influence CTR ~unding poiicf, which is the exclusive province of the Scientific Advisory Board with the advice to the CTR staff.
