Winston Model Testifies
BELLA SHAW: The man who peddled Winston cigarettes to
the world urged Congress today to take the glamor out of tobacco
advertiseme nts.
David Goerlitz was a model and spokesman for Winston for
six years. He told the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee
teenagers are the targets of today's tobacco ads.
DAVID GOERLITZ: Over the years, youngsters have come up
to me and asked me for autographs, having seen me on billboards
and in magazines, and I've had children tell me they started to
smoke Winstons because of me. For that I shall always feel
guilty and carry the personal beast of guilt, fear and anger.
I'll deal with that for the rest of my life.

SHAW: Goerlitz kicked cigarettes after 25 years of
Democratic Congressman Thomas Lukens of Ohio has
sponsored legislation to ban all tobacco ads that might even be
seen by youths.
Republican Congressman Alex McMillan of North Carolina
opposes the measure. He says it puts Congress in the position of
dictating what can or cannot be sold every time a vocal group
complains about a product.
