Tallahassee, Florida
Tallahassee -- Governor Lawton Chiles today was appointed to service
on the newly created National Governor' S Association's IIeal.th Carc
Working Group. The prestigious panel of eight governors will work
closely with President Bill Clinton and Congresa t.o ensure that the
national health care reform proposal addresses state concerns and
builds on the strong state reforms already in place.
"President Clinton, as a former governor, understands tiiat the states
hold the keys to accomplishing meaningful national health care
reform," Governor Chiles said. "Florida, along with a handful ot
other states, has been clearing a path for the rest of the country to
follow -- a path leading towards a day when every citizen has access
tn affordable, quality health care."
Chiles is one of only four Democratic qovernors on the panel and the
only governor representing a large state. Joining Governor Chiles on
the NGA working group will be Governors Carrol A. Campbell, Jr. of
South Carolina, Howard Dean of Vermont, Roy Romer of Colorado,
Drereton Jonee of Kentucky, Arne C.arlson of Minnesota, Mike Leavitt of
Utah and Tommy G. Thompson of Wisconsin. Governors Campbell and Dean
will co-chair thc group, until the NGAfs annual mpeting in August.
