Powers of the Public Health Commissions/Boards of the 50 States and the District of Columbia
Abstract
Memorandum written in response to "the New York Public Health Council's actions." Lists results of a review of the powers of the Boards of Health for the fifty states and the District of Columbia "to determine whether any other state board has the power exercised by the New York Public Health Council. Divides states into three categories, those with powers similar to New York State's, those states without a health board or commission, and those states with boards, but without "broad or emergency powers."

the statutes dealing,with the powers and duties of the Boards of Health for
the fif'ty states and the District of Columbia to determine whether any other
state board has the power exercised by the New York Public Health Counci'l..
The following states''boards have broad powers or emergency powers. These
powers while they may not be exactly the same as New York are worth noting as
potentiall problem areas (10):
Delaware Washington
Arkansas New York
North Carolina Vermont

Mississippi *'Connecticut
*These states do not have boards, but their Commissioner does have broadl
powers.
