Re: Survey of Corporate Smoking Policies
__-_ ----------------------------------------------------------
Contrary to the anti-smokers' claims, there apparently is no
trend toward restrictive workplace smoking policies and hiring
practices.
As you know, last fall our economic consultant, UCLA Dean Lew
Solmon, surveyed 1100 of the nation's largest and fastest growing
companies to determine their smoking policies and smoker hiring
practices. A copy of Lew's final report is attached for vour
review. r
The survey finds that most companies (63.8 percent) do
not have smoking policies. And those companies that do Have
po"ricies (31.9 percent) do so because of practical realities that
exist in the workplace, i.e., safety.
Few companies (only 2.5 percent) have policies that prohibit
smoking on company premises; virtually no companies (.9 percent)
refuse to hire smokers.
When a problem arises, most companies encourage employees to
work things out for themselves.
These findings will be an effective government and public
relations tool to counter "bandwagon" arguments supporting
restrictive legislation and policies. The survey reinforces our
argument that companies can and are effectively dealing with the
issue on their own -- there is no need for restrictive
legis7~.ation.
