JOHN SLADE, M.D. University of of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey St. Peter's Medical Center 254 Eden Avenue New Brunswick, New Jersey 08903 Dr. Slade is 38 years old. Received his B.A. from Oberlin College and a M.D. from Emory University in 1974. His letter of June 17, 1987 indicates that he intends to testify on the issue of causation, including the tobacco industry's efforts to refute the causation issue, and on addiction. He is currently working on a grant with the Hunterton Health Fund entitled "Training Health Professionals in the Cessation of Tobacco Use". He is obviously~n advocate for the anti-smoking campai.gn and is•involved.-~n community activities such as the Advisory Council to Stop Teenage Addiction to Tobacco, Palo Alto, California (1987 to the present) and was a Program Chairman for the "Treating Tobacco Dependence" 1987 Symposium of the Committee on Drug and Alcohol Abuse of the Medical Society of New Jersey. I note that one of his publications is Slade, Kopelowitz and Nissenblatt, An Analysis of R. J. Reynolds' Position Paper on Health Effects of Smoking, Tobacco Products Litigation Reporter, Parts I, II and III, 1986; Part IV, 1987. Other publications of interest are: Slade, Statistics, Smoking and Health, JAMA, 1986, Volume 255 at 1015, 1016; Slade, A Disease Model of Cigarette Use, New York State Journal of Medicine 1985, 85 (7):294-298. He also made a presentation entitled An Examination of Tobacco Industry Research on Smoking and Health presented at the Second National Conference on Tobacco Products Liability, Boston, January 1986. Additionally, he presented a paper Tobacco and Tobacco Dependence at the annual meeting of the American Medical Society on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies, San Francisco, April, 1986. Finally, I expect that his presentation "Proving Causation", The Third National Conference On Tobacco Products Liability, Boston, January, 1987 would be of interest. Dr. Slade included as part of his report, a copy of a book review which is to be published shortly. In this review, he concludes that "Nicotine Dependence is by far the Country's greatest drug problem". He discusses the nicotine withdrawal syndrome and refers to the DSM III outline as set forth in the American Psychiatric Association Standards. In summary, Dr. Slade is obviously an anti-smoking advocate who has come to Mr. Fine from the tobacco litigation project. I suspect that R. J. Reynolds may have assembled information on Dr. Slade•from other sources. rn _J 00 co
