3. AMERICAN COUNCIL ON SCIENCE AND HEALTH (ACSH)
~ Founded: 1978
Headquarters: New York City
Executive Director: Elizabeth M. Whelan
Members: 160
Staff: 18
Budget: $1 million
ACSH's purpose is to provide consumers with scientifically
balanced evaluations of food, chemicals, the environment, and
human health.
ACSH's support comes primarily from the chemical and food
industries. To take the heat off of these industries, ACSH
uses the media and scientific forums to target cigarettes as
the primary cause of the nation's health problems. In fact, the
organization's top priorities are: "a) alert Americans to the
spectacular dangers of cigarette smoking; b) educate consumers
to the reality that trace amounts of potentially toxic chemicals,
whether found in synthetic or natural sources, do not necessarily
by themselves pose a hazard to human health; c) warn of the
health dangers inherent in 'dismantling the system' (e.g.,
banning pesticides and food additives); and d) generally help
Americans to distinguish between a health hazard and a health
hoax."
In this process, Whelan has become an outspoken critic of smoking
covered frequently in the media. She also makes anti-smoking
presentations at scientific meetings, writes anti-smoking
articles in her newsletter, and is a frequent newspaper and
magazine anti-tobacco op-ed writer.
ACSH is funded by companies such as Dow Chemical, Ciba-Geigy,
American Cyanamid, DuPont, Union Carbide, Uniroyal, Coca-Cola,
Eli Lilly, Shell Oil, Georgia-Pacific, etc. Whelan challenges
the notion that her group is beholden to its financial backers
(Washington Post 1/27/85).
