•UFERINTRNOENT
Thank you for your letter of May 11,. You were quite
correct in your underst anding that your contribut ion would b e
used to support the particular kind of reSearch you would specify.
I am sorry if my letter of May 2 raised any uncertainty in your
mind.
You may most certainly designate your grant for research
and we Ehall be ve.ry glad to see that the money is used precisely as
you wish. The customary procedure is for the gift to be made to
the hospital rather than to the individual conducting the research,
and it must receive the approval of the corporate body, the Board of
Managers, or its delegate. This plan is followed in order to insure
a high standard of scientific work and to provide to the donors of
funds the guarantees which are standard in all scientific instit u-
tions. The specific purpose of the gift is completely recognized,
and the funds are earmarked in accordance with the wishes of the donor.
In yo ur case the money will be used to continue Dr. Martin's work on
tobacco products.
If you have any further question in regard to this,
please do not hesitate to call on me.
Sincerely yours,
CPR/eam C. P. Rhoads, M.D.
