Mr. John L. Bacon
Director- Corporate Contributions
R. J. Reynolds Industries, Inc.
Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27102
Dear John:
I would like to thank you all once again for your
hospitality during my visit to Winston-Salem. I thought
the meeting was very effective, particularly with the
addition of Mr. Morse and Mr. Fyock. I have managed to
accomplish several of the items we agreed upon. Let me
list them.
1. I reached .Dr*. Prusiner ands informed him that
both the additional money.,and the new install-
ment were:on the way.. He -was delighted and
said that the delay in receiving the addition
caused no inconvenience at all because it was
taking awhile to free up the space into which
he would move.
2. I did have an opportunity to talk with Dr. Handler
about the proposal from Duke University~ He-said
that he would be glad to look into the whole matter
once he is free from what he called the farewell
parties that are taking place in connection with
his departure from the Academy. Actually, he did
not look at all well and I learned later that he
is going into the hospital for extensive investi-
gation soon after July lst. Thus, I think we will
want to hold the Duke proposal on ice for a bit to
see how matters develop.
3. I talked to Dr. Shannon on the telephone as a
preliminary to seeing him in Cambridge. Ile agreed
that I should discuss the situation at Bowman Gray
with Manson Meads. With regard to the veterinary
schools in Washington and Idaho, he felt that we
might make a very special contribution to the advance-
ment of the "slow virus" disc+ases if we try to coor-
dinate in some way the institutions which are doinq
work in this field. i9e agreed '.a discuss the
opportunities further In Cambridge.

4. I called Mr. Ray Carmichael at the Sidney Farber
Cancer Research Institute. He said that the first
individual they had asked to prepare a proposal had
fallen down on the job and that they now have another
individual who is more keenly interested in the matter
at work. Apparently Carmichael, who was here for nearly
ten years, is proving to be highly successful with res-
pect to developmental work at Sidney Farber.
5. I spoke to Dr. Charles Heidelberger. He stated that
if he could have a two-year grant fcr a total of
$500,000 starting October 1st of the current year it
would be an enormous help to him in getting the basic
side of his own research interests reestablished. Both
McCarty and Shannon endorsed this program. Heidelberger
will present an explicit proposal.
I will now get: -on with the matter. of raising the question ., , :~ ".,
of peer reviews -and;-with. planning the visits to Denver, :and -Salt «. .,
Lake City and will let you know how the discussions turn.out.
I will also begin to lay plans for the dinner meeting on
September 16th. Please be sure to let me know of any topics
that you definitely would like to have covered in whatever
detail seems desirable.
Sincerely,
~
Fre erick eitz
P.S. The discussion with Dr. Handler turned out to mis-fire.
He turned me over to Dr. Anlyan who had been responsible
for the initial proposals so we will have to deal with
the material we have.
