In biarch, 1818, the Committee of Fifty was formed to
perteot a eorld wide orFanieation of the enemios of tobaooo. It
is to conduct a scientific investig-ition into the "Physical horrors"
wrought by tobaooo. 1he nssoointion is modeled upon tlie Committee
ot Firty which investiRated the liquor problem.
Lr. rNEene Lymsn Fisk, ona of tiio riajsicr.# is also Medioal
Lireotor of the Lire F:xtension Institute. In speakinR of the plans
of the Conasittee of Fifty, he says: "There is no +:uthoritRtive analysis
of th. situation as yet. The matter is just now beinR broup,ht to the
tor and is destined to ooeupy a conspicuous plaoe. Therefore the
public should have the true faots. We propose to ^:ot thes.# th. work
saay take us years. When it is finished we shall render a report
covering all phases of the tobacco question and people oen then decide
intelligently what they want to do about it. To facilitate the
investigation the Committee will be divided ir,to se nrnte seations,
suoh as physioloqioal, medical and sociological. ~he use of land for
