You will.find enclosed a transcribed version of a letter
we have receivea from Dr. James A. Shannon who will participatce
in the visit at the Medical. School of the University of Washing-
ton in Seattle on February 25th.
As you will note, he raises a major question concerning
the proposal we have received from the University of California
Medical School in San Francisco in relation to slow virus diseases.
His dout>ts refer less to the scientific merits of the study than
to the fact. that Prusiner's group may be receiving very large
support from the Howard Huch_ers_ Medical Foundation. This is an
issue which I: will plan to d~.scuss with Dr. Krevans, the Dean of
the Medi.cal School at that institution,in the immediate future.
Personal.ly, one expects good individuals or groups to have
suhstanti al support: from the National Institutes of Health. One
of the great virtues of the Reynolds grants lies in the fact that
t:hey counterbalance the growing rigidities of government funding.
Cm the other hand, support from the Hughes Foundation, if substan-
tial., may put the program in a different light. Dr. McCarty and
I will plan to visit San Fr.anci.sco'on February 26t.h if, after the
discussion with Dr. Krevans, that' still seems desirable.
Sincerely,
cc:: Mr. H. C. Roemer

P.:a . I t al.ked to Dr. Krevans who tel ls me that the 11,ushes support
is Licinq~ghasec~"~t''-si.nce the Foundation has decided to drop
viruss research. As a result we are trying to arrange to see
the group in San Francisco on Tuesday, February 26th.
