AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
On the occasion of the 51st Annual Scientific Ses-
sions of the American Heart Association, I would like
to welcome you all to this impressive forum'of infor-
mational exchange concerning the cardiovascular sys-
tem in health and disease. For the past 30 years the
American Heart Association as a nonprofit voluntary
health agency has had as its goal the conquering of
diseases of the heart and circulation by means of re-
search, prevention, and education of both the profes-
sionally involved and the lay public. The Scientific Ses-
sions are an indispensable means by which the fruits
of our members' research are made known to the pro-
fessional sector.
Participation in this continuing tradition of scholarly
presentations has been increasing yearly, which
serves to indicate the effectiveness of the Scientific
Sessions as a vehicle for dissemination of our current
knowledge of the heart and blood vessels. This year
the number of abstracts submitted for presentation
totaled 2967, an increase of almost 1000 from the
number submitted just three years ago. It is unfortu-
nate that temporal limitations allow acceptance of only
991 of these fine examples of responsible scientific
investigation, which illustrate both the high quality of
the investigators involved and the equilibrium be-
tween basic research and clinical analysis that the As-
sociation strives to maintain. This high quality of our
membership-and particularly the outstanding
scholarship of our young investigators-is also well
illustrated by the several other facets of the Scientific
Sessions, such as the 7 Clinical Sessions, 7 Cardiovas-
cular Conferences, 22 "How To" Sessions, 11 Post-
graduate Seminars, 22 Scientific Exhibits, and the 3rd
National Conference on Thrombosis and Hemostasis.
We are fortunate this year, as we have been in the ~
past, in having some very distinguished guest speak- n
h
ers. Dr. Henry N. Wagner, Jr., of Johns Hopkins N
School of Hygiene, will deliver the Lewis A. Connor M
Memorial Lecture, speaking on the development and (~
applications of radio isotopogra phy in the diagnosis of 0
cardiovascular disease. The International Lecture will.
be delivered by Dr. Wilfred G. Bigelow of the University

of Toronto, who will critically review heart surgery,
past, present, and future.
Among us this week in Dallas are physicians, basic
scientists, nurses, and allied health professionals;
planning a balanced presentation for such a diverse
audience is certainly not an easy task, and the 24
members of the Committee on Scientific Sessions,
headed by Dr. Lawrence S. Cohen, merit special
thanks for their diligence and circumspection in pro-
viding us with a program appea1ing to all.
I find it particularly fitting that we are convening this
year in the city that is also the new national headquar-
ters for the American Heart Association. The national
organization is strong and stable, and its future in Dal-
las is bright. At this time I would like to reaffirm my
conviction that the American Heart Association
throughout the country is equally strong and stable,
and its future equally bright!
W. Gerald Austen, M.D.
