The objective would not be to exonerate cigarette smoking from the attacks
that have been lodged against it. The objective would be to lift from tobacco
manufacturers the "merchants of death" stigma and to substitute in its place
an image of people earnestly seeking the truth -- even to the point where they
honestly and forthrightly circulate the charges made against them.
While I do not know the details of the tobacco companies' research expendi-
tures I would suspect that there is enough scientific drama surrounding them
to support the kind of human story that is demanded. Few subjects are as
compelling to a mass audience as the stories of scientific investigation. With
all the research it is doing the tobacco council must have the raw material for
what I have described. In short, if they are gamblers enough to promise a free
hand to an accomplished story teller I'd guess they'd come up with a manuscript
well worth reading and well worth publishing.
