Dr. Tomar is a smokeless tobacco specialist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA (AP 5/5/94). Tomar says it is says it is impossible to determine how much nicotine a user gets from a specific brand without knowing the products pH level. Researchers believe companies use additives to raise the pH levels of smokeless products, making them more alkaline and increasing their absorption through mucous tissues, according to Tomar (AP 5/5/94).
