Social Acceptability
(PM) Industry efforts to counteract the decline in social acceptability of smoking worldwide. The tobacco industry, primarily through the efforts of Philip Morris (a.k.a. Altria Group), carried out a broad series of covert actions to halt and reverse the decline in social acceptability of smoking worldwide. These efforts included public relations activities in countries throughout the globe aimed at influencing journalists and the media, scientific publications and scientific outcomes, public opinion and legislation. Philip Morris typically persuaded other tobacco companies and National Manufacturer Associations (NMA's) to help pay for these efforts. All efforts were aimed at preserving the profitability of the tobacco business.
