PM encourages this practive to preserve the social accpetability of smoking and defray smoking bans.Philip Morris (PM) has created a new program which promotes ventilation called Options. A June 2, 2000 press release from PM stated that the Options web site is "an innovative on-line resource for hospitality and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) professionals who want to deal constructively with the issue of public-place smoking." In addition to the web site, the Options program sponsors "forums for the hospitality and HVAC industries to learn from each other," and provides "support and funding of ventilation technology applications to build awareness and showcase specific indoor air quality improvements." The Options web site admits that, "Options, Philip Morris USA does not purport to address health effects attributed to environmental tobacco smoke.
