Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Contract research lab; does gov't work and also takes private contracts.Michael Guerin and Roger Jenkins of Oak Ridge National Laboratory have well-documented ties to the tobacco industry over the past several decades through their work at ORNL. Studies coming out of national laboratories, and the scientists conducting the research, have a perceived high level of credibility because they are governmental entities. However, in addition to research and development in its official capacity as a national laboratory, ORNL also accepts private contracts whose research and results do not have official government standing. Michael Guerin, who runs the analytical chemistry division at ORNL, has received more than $1 million from the Council for Tobacco Research (CTR) and the Center for Indoor Air Research (CIAR).
