Defense

S.T. Jones is located at Lorillard Tobacco Company, One Park Avenue, New York, NY 10021-8087. The phone number is (212) 545-3000. S. T. Jones co-wrote an article with Alexander Spears entitled "Chemical and Physical Criteria for Tobacco Leaf of Modern Day Cigarettes" written for the 35th Tobacco Chemists Research Conference. Jones has knowledge concerning the levels of nicotine in tobacco cigarettes. Spears writes about the trends in cigarette manufacture over the last five years and the evolution toward reduced-tar products, which he concludes are gaining greater market share. Turning to nicotine, re reports, based on these trends, one would conclude that the lowest tar segment is composed of cigarettes utilizing a tobacco blend which is significantly higher in nicotine. Although one cannot conclude that this has been achieved solely by the selection of tobacco, it does indicate a trend toward the use of tobacco with higher nicotine levels. His report concludes that the tar yield of the United States domestic cigarette has fallen steadily from the 1950s to the present date, and while in the early work, varieties which yielded less tar also had reduced nicotine levels, current research is directed toward increasing the nicotine levels while maintaining or marginally reducing tar deliveries. (Barron's 5/16/94). Spears states, circa 1994, that it is incorrect to assume that cigarettes with higher concentrations of nicotine in the tobacco result in higher yields of nicotine in tobacco result in higher yields of nicotine in tobacco smoke, as measured by the FTC's smoking machine (Barron's 5/16/94). But David Kessler points to Benowitz's study which showed that some smokers using light cigarettes wind up with more nicotine (and nicotine metabolites) in their blook plasma (Barron's 5/16/94).
