American Council on Science and Health
(Formed by the petrochemical industry for scientific defense)The abbreviation for the American Council on Science and Health is ACSH. ACSH is an anti-smoking group. (E. Whelan 1984). The Satin cigarette slogan was "Spoil yourself with Satin". The ACHS commended this in a newsletter as the first truthful cigarette ad because "our dictionary defines 'spoil' as 'to damage seriously; to ruin; to impair the quality or effect of.' What better way to describe a product which harms the lungs, heart and other organs, stains the teeth and fingers, promotes wrinkles, fouls the breath, and leaves an unpleasant odor on hair and clothing. Certainly the more than 300,000 Americans who died last year of smoking related diseases were 'spoiled' by cigarettes." (L. White, Merchants 1988). In 1982, the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) conducted a survey of magazines to determine who well they covered the hazards of smoking and to explore the role that cigarette advertising might play in editorial policy. The study clearly showed that the best coverage of smoking and health was presented in those magazines which did not accept cigarette advertising. (L. White, Merchants 1988). In January 1986, the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) conducted a second survey of 18 magazines to determine how well they covered the hazards of smoking and to explore the role that cigarette advertising might play in editorial policy. The study clearly showed that the best coverage was presented in those magazines which did not accept cigarette advertisements. (L. White, Merchants 1988).
