Memo (re: report on the psychopharmacological effects of the N'-substituted nicotine analogues) 16 Mar 1983
2 pages

Memo describes results of a study on psychopharmacologic effects of N'-substituted nicotine analogues. Compunds were found to produce mild sedation and muscle relaxation in rats, although not depressants, and "might be of value in anxiety-related depression. Recommedation to consider applying for patents for this chemically unique class of compounds.

Research at the University of Rochester 20 Jan 1982
4 pages

Describes collaborative research regarding acetaldhyde uptake and interactions across the blood-brain barrier. Describes experimental design, presents results and concludes acetaldehyde crosses the blood-brain barrier resulting in equal distribution throughout all rat brain regions. States these data, combined with behavioral data, indicate further acetaldehyde studies be pursued.

Proceedings of the Tobacco Smoke Inhalation Workshop on Experimental Methods in Smoking and Health Research 19750100/P
169 pages

This is a summary of an NCI conference based on research program designed to reduce the risk of cigarette smokers through the development of less hazardous cigarettes. This conference intended to obtain consensus on acceptable experimental conditions and animal subjects to determine effects of exposure to tobacco smoke. Topics of experimental studies summarized look include: mechanisms of whole smoke or single smoke components, pathogenesis of particular diseases, and screening of less hazardous cigarette models. Two debates in particular that arose were how to distinguish the causal factors of lung cancer and other pulmonary diseases, and how to accurately measure dose uptake in animal subjects.

The Fallacy of Non-Tobacco Cigarets Jan 1975
7 pages

Discusses the smoking and health controversy and the current competition the tobacco industry is facing from companies in other industries who are researching and marketing synthetic, non-tobacco cigarettes. Challenges the safety and effectiveness of the materials being used in non-tobacco cigarettes. Queries as to whether these new cigarettes are any safer than tobacco cigarettes, noting that they "'present unknown and possibly entirely new potential hazards.'" Notes that a non-tobacco cigarette may very well be "the hoax of the century."

Behavioral Research - 1600 800600 - 810600 Behavioral Research Laboratory Annual Report Part I 19810605/Y
57 pages

First of two studies is an exploratory study relating six social psychological factors (health, stress, arousal need, environmental, socio-cultural, role definiton) to four factors related to smoking behavior (control, salience of delivery level, consumption, brand switching) in multiple regression analyses. Relevant factors found to explain more than 5% of total variance in smoking behavior are: use of preventive health care, incidence of moderate health problems; tension, somatic symptomatology; stimulation seeker, depressive, attention seeking, risk taker; awareness of need to smoke, mood management; perception of social desirability of smoking. Second study looks at acceptability of cigarettes as it relates to firmness of cigarette when lit and unlit.

Changes of Smoking Habits and Cough in Men Smoking Cigarettes with 30% Nsm Tobacco Substitute 19760612/P
4 pages

This is a summary of the subject article, printed in British Medical Journal (in 1976). The study was of the effect of smoking cigarettes with 30% of the tobacco replaced with a tobacco substitute (NSM, presumed to stand for "new smoking material.") NSM was to reduce the tar and nicotine delivery of the cigarettes. Subjects' chest symptoms, cigarette consumption and forced expiratory respiratory volumes were measured monthly. 200 men began the trial and 159 completed it. The study states that the test cigarettes were acceptable to all but one of the subjects. The study noted a "small but significant" reduction of cough. It concludes that cigarettes of 30% NSM that deliver only 1 mg. of nicotine are "likely to be acceptable to smokers and may reduce coughing." Says further trials are needed to establish what long-term effects such cigarettes may have on smokers' health.
