Preliminary Draft Proposal for Research Sri No. 8LH Development of Portable Analytical Instrumentation 28 Nov 1975
25 pages

Contains a proposal for the development of an instrument system which will be used as a research tool to obtain accurate data on atmospheric carbon monoxide and nicotine concentrations in public and semi-public places. Includes a delineation of the overall systems specification. Reviews previous studies regarding the particulate phase of tobacco smoke. Discusses various analytical methods for determining nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke, noting the ones that are most appropriate for the present project. Discusses data recording and measurement requirements, possible power sources for the instrument, the type of air pump needed for the instrument, and overall packaging of the instrument to make it both as inconspicuous as possible and easily transportable. Includes diagrams.

Smoking Machine Parameters for Collection of Total Particulate Matter and Gases From Low Ignition-Potential Cigarettes 14 Mar 1993
9 pages

Written by a consultant to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Discusses the details of the FTC smoking machine tests and compares them to the CORESTA method. Discussion follows on materials and methods of testing, samples, cost, and results. The document recommends using the FTC method in determining the particulate deliveries of low-yield cigarettes because the apparatus and methodology are flexible and can more closely conform to how smokers actually smoke.

Controlled Profile Cigaret Alternate Materials Research Alternate Material Product 720201 - 720229 07 Mar 1972
3 pages

Discusses progress in reducing the odor that comes from pyrolysis of the Elvax wax coating used on controlled profile cigarette prototypes. Says a sample polymer that has been purified by distillation will be tested for flavor properties. Says that bubble-coated olefin polymer coatings "have a good appearance" but "have not made good cigarets" on the Mark VIII (believed to be a prototype C.P. cigarette or cigarette machine). Testing for subjective evaluation continues against KOOL and Salem cigarettes. Testing on an Elvax Menthol Controlled Profile Cigarette continues. Preliminary investigation of alternate hole sizes shows increased rod dilution "is achievable." Plans continue to investigate using alternate hole sizes to achieve "improved profile maniupulation."

"The Effect of the Humectants Glycerol and Propylene Glycol on Mainstream and Sidestream Smoke Deliveries of Acrolein, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, Acetone and Propionaldehyde" Feb 1987
38 pages

Reports on a European study of the effects of humectants on delivery of several smoke components. Notes that cigarettes often contain glycerol and propylene glycol as humectants. Conducts a study on cigarettes spiked with glycerol or propylene glycol. Finds that glycerol heavily contributes to the delivery of acrolein and formaldehyde in sidestream smoke. Reports slight increases in acetaldehyde deliveries on sidestream smoke with both humectants.
