Abstract

Reports on laboratory investigations of the addition of nicotine and nicotine salts to tobacco blends and reconstituted leaf "for the enhancement of impact in low tar cigarettes." Notes that although enhancement could be achieved with added nicotine, it resulted in a much harsher tasting cigarette. Lists all laboratory notebook references for the investigations.

Hypothesis
Nicotine transport, transfer, and uptake
Design changes which alter nicotine delivery or effect how the product causes and maintains dependence, including transfer of nicotine from tobacco to smoke, and uptake into the body.
Use of additives
Modification of tobacco products through use of additives and measuring effects on dependence, behavior, and toxicity.

May 26, 1994 TO: Dr. S. T. Jones .R-- - FROM: J. P. Morgan SUBJECT: Nicotine Addition and Transfer in Tobacco Blends and Reconstituted Leaf Samples From March 25, 1976 to December 6, 1977 our laboratory investigated the addition of nicotine/ nicotine salts on tobacco blends and in RL for the enhancement of impact in low tar cigarettes. In addition, the transfer of nicotine from high nicotine tobaccos to other materials was investigated. Enhancement of impact could be achieved with nicotine addition; however, the taste was harsh and this problem was not tackled by our group!
