December 30 - Laboratory analysis of LUCKY STRIKE Lights King Size and
~ettes produced prior to factory Christmas closing For ginghamton,
New York, introduction indicates all parameters are on target. Product has
been released and is enroute to the test market area.
Preparations are under way for large-scale consumer testing of Project AFC
model cigarettes and LUCKY STRIKE Lights 100's. Cigarette fabrication will
begin as soon as factory operations resume. The scope of the evaluation
will be broadened to include a benchmark study with ~lerit 100's cigarettes.
The competitive brand will be overwrapped and repaekaged to remove brand
identification. We have set a ~arge~ of early February for consumer distri-
bution.

November 23 - (Ā¢ontd) - Design parameters for Project AFC models delivering
9 ~and utilizing a blend formulation (AFC 45) containing selected
flue-cured grades and alternate by-product compositions have been established.
Cigarettes are being prepared for taste panel evaluation versus Model 35, pre-
viously tested among in-Company smokers.
December 2 - We acknowledge approval of marketing plans to expand test market
~on of LUCKY STRIKE Lights King Size and i00 mm Cigarettes to
Binghamton, New York, with first shipments on January 9.
Durham Branch continues to produce and accumulate LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filter
100's Cigarettes for February national distribution. Daily laboratory
monitoring indicates smoke yield and quality parameters are being maintained
in accordance with specifications.
December 9 - Durham Branch continues to produce CARLTON Slims Cigarettes for
replacement of existing markets and accumulation purposes. Daily monitoring
of menthol cigarettes produced this week indicates average smoke deliveries
of 6,2-mg "tar" per cigarette and 0,O55-mg menthol per puff.
Deve]opment of king size filter cigarettes for potential application in export
markets continues, Models designed to deliver 12- to 14-mg "tar" and weighing
less than 90 grams per i00 cigarettes have been prepared utilizing two tobacco
blend formulations for initial screening among laboratory smokers.
December 16 - As per marketing directions, Laboratory work has been initiated
~6~development of a king-size filter cigarette with a targeted smoke
delivery of 6-mg "tar." Preliminary model cigarettes are being prepared
with CARLTON Slims tobacco blend formulation for taste evaluation. Our
progress with this product will be reported under project code "CDF."
All packaging materials, perforated tipping, etc. for the manufacture of
LUCKY STRIKE Lights King Size and 100's Cigarettes have been received and
Durham Branch will produce requirements for the Binghamton, New York, test
market early next week.
December 22 L Research personnel were on hand at Durham Branch this week
to ass1~s in LUCKY STRIKE Lights King Size and 100's production destined
for Binghamton, New York, January 9 test market introduction. Laboratory
analyses are under way.
Design parameters for Project CDF cigarettes have been established with
CARLTON Slims Filter leaf blend, casing and flavoring formulation. Prototype
models deliver 6-mg "tar" with a puff count of 7.5. Alternate blend formula~
are under consideration for smoke taste improvements.

October 28 - Development of model king-size (i mg delivery) and 100's
~-~very) cigarettes for Project AFC-C continues to receive priority
effort, Considerations for physical parameters and burn characteristics have
led our efforts toward a blend formulation consisting of 40% expanded tobacco.
Fabrication of additional cigarettes is under way to facilitate evaluations
of smoke taste parameters.
November 4 - Development work on two model king-size cigarettes for potential
~n in export markets has been initiated. One model is being con-
structed to incorporate 20 mm filter tips and 24 rm~ overwrap with a total
cigarette weight design parameter not to exceed 90 grams per 100 cigarettes.
Target smoke delivery is 12 to 14 milligrams. A second product involves
menthol, with particular emphasis directed toward a CARLTON King Size
Menthol Cigarette with 5 milligrams "tar" delivery.
Alternate leaf blend formulations incorporating selected flue-cured strip
grades and by-product compositions are being investigated for application
with Project AFC-C and AFC-T cigarettes~ Emphasis in this work is geared to
improving smoke taste characteristics.
November Ii - The Department of Manufacture and Purchasing personnel were
at A~ndustries this week to observe production of CARLTON Slims Box
blanks (Design No. 24), Durham Branch has received the packaging materials
and resumed fabrication of CARLTON Slims Filter Cigarettes in anticipation
of manufacturing promotional package requirements on Monday.
Incorporation of flavor components in the filter tips of Project AFC ciga-
rettes is being studied as a mechanism for improving taste parameters.
Models have been prepared for evaluation by applying flavorants to charcoal
for AFC-T cigarettes and by way of plasticizer for AFC-C cigarettes.
November 18 - Durham Branch began production of replenishment and promotional
requ rp~s for CARLTON Slims Cigarettes this week utilizing box blank design
No. 24. Mechanical opening tests indicate superior performance compared to
blanks used in earlier ~est market produetion~ Relocation of foil glue spot to
the hinge area is proving to be a positive assist factor in box opening charac-
teristics. Printed blanks incorporating moon cuts (design No. 26) have been
received and are undergoing tests. A report summarizing mechanical aspects
of No. 24 and No, 26 blanks will be forwarded in the near future.
Production of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filter lO0's Cigarettes for February national
distribution was initiated on Monday. Daily laboratory monitoring indicates
quality parameters and smoke analyses are on target.
November 23 - Promotional requirements of CARLTON Slims 100's Filter and Menthol
~garettes (coupon inserts and banded merchandise) have been completed and
shipped to Charlotte, Grand Rapids, and Sacramento for distribution. Durham
Branch continues to produce cigarettes on a 2-shift per day basis for replenish-
ment of existing markets and to accumulate stock for potential future test
market openings~

September 23 (Contd) - a myriad of problems basically relating to a
conscientious effort by all concerned to ensure product quality. Problems
associated with wrapping material defects, as well as packaging equipment,
have been identified and steps taken for corrective action.
Laboratory personnel were in Durham during the week to assist in prepara-
tion of initial quantities of the filter tobacco blend which is being
utilized today in first production of CARLTON Slims Filter Cigarettes.
Se tember 30 - Affidavit analyses for LUCKY STRIKE Lights Cigarettes were

nicotine for the king size and 9-mg "tar" and 0.8-mg nicotine for the
10O's. Cigarettes are en route for the October i0 scheduled market opening
in Spokane, Washington.
Mechanical problems with the crush-proof box packer, associated primarily
with erratic timing at critical transfer points within the packer, limited
production of CARLTON Slims 100's Cigarettes early this week. Modifica-
tions and adjustments by Durham Branch and Raynor and Adams personnel have
improved operation during the past three shifts (Wednesday night and
Thursday). Production through 3 p.m. Friday amounted to 3,516,000 filter
and 408~000 menthol cigarettes. Durham Branch is scheduled to begin
cigarette packaging operations on a three-shift basis next week.
October 7 - Durham Branch completed initial introductory requirements (ex-
c u~ng coupon merchandise) of CARLTON Slims 100's Filter Box Cigarettes
on Monday with an accumulation of 5.214,000 cigarettes. Daily monitoring
indicates all quality parameters and smoke analyses were maintained in
accordance with specifications. Affidavit analyses are in progress and
will be forwarded next week.
First shipments to the trade of LUCKY STRIKE Lights King Size and 100's
Cigarettes will begin on Monday in the Spokane, Washington, test market area.
October 14 -Production of CARLTON Slims Cigarettes was suspended on Tuesday
t~nvestigate alternatives for improving quality of packaging materials and
box opening characteristics. Total filter cigarettes accumulated to date is
6.57 million. Affidavit smoke analyses reflecting "tar" and nicotine delivery
of 6 mg and 0.6 mg, respectively, were forwarded on Tuesday.
Durham Branch has produced additional LUCKY STRIKE Bights King Size Cigarettes
earmarked for special promotional distribution in the test market area. These
cigarettes are being held for packaging in 1O's box wrapping materials pending
receipt of coupons.
October 21 - First shipments to the trade of CARLTON Slims 100's Filter and
Men~Cisarettes will begin on Monday in the Sacramento~ CA; Grand Rapids,
MI; and Charlotte, NC, test market areas.
A report was forwarded on Thursday outlining the mechanics for approximating
"Percent 'Tar' Free" parameters of Cigarettes.

August 19 - We acknowledge approval of our product recommendations for
Pro3ect LSL king-size and i00 cigarettes and marketing plans for test market
introduction in Spokane, Washington with first shipments to the trade on
September 26~ We are preparing, as recommended, to secure wrapping materials
for the 100 mm product at a target circumference of 24.4 mm. Formulas for
preparation of the tobacco blend and cigarette specifications will be for-
warded to the Department of Manufacture next week. Pending receipt of wrapping
materials, production of 2.7 million, each variety, will begin during the week
of September 12.
LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filter King Size Cigarettes first shipments to the trade
will begin on Monday in the Wave IV 1983 introduction area.
- As an adjunct to product development work with Project AFC-T,
conslderation is being given to a flavor tip incorporating charcoal.
Preliminary model cigarettes are being fabricated to evaluate this potential.
Se tember 1 - In-Company panel testing has been initiated to establish preferene
~o~r t~ste characteristics and smoking appeal of 9-mg "tar" delivery Project
AFT-T models incornorating monoaeetate filters and low carbon dual filter tips.
Laboratory work is being directed toward development of Project AFCLC cigarettes
utilizing additive-free tobacco blends containing 60% FET. Design parameters
are being studied to produce desired burn rate, puff count and per puff smoke
deliveries in king size and I00 mm cigarettes delivering i- and 5-mg "tar,"
respectively.
S~tember 9 Research personnel were at Durham Branch this week to assist
in the blending, casing and flavoring of two quarters of LUCKY STRIKE Lights
tobacco blend. All packaging materials and perforated tipping for the manu-
facturing of LUCKY STRIKE Lights King Size and 1OO's have been received and
approved. Production of test market quantities will begin on ~Ionday~

100's Cigarettes was completed at Durham Branch during the week and 2.7
million of each style are available for shipment to Spokane in accord with a
revised market introduction date of October I0. Daily laboratory monitoring
of production indicates all quality parameters and smoke delivery specifications
are on target. Promotional coupon package requirements for king size cigarettes
have been completed and it is anticipated 100's packages will be available no
later than Monday.
September 23 - All test market requirements, including coupon merchandise,

We are n eased with quality parameters of the respective products from the
standpoint of laboratory analyses as well as smoking properties. Affidavit

July 22 (contd) - Tobacco blend and filter rods are being prepared in the
Laboratory for use in factory fabrication of Project LSL-1O0 model ciga-
rettes. Product from this evaluation will be used in finalizing design
parameters for physical properties and smoke delivery.
3ul 29 - We acknowledge approval of our product recon~nendation for Project
~er and menthol cigarettes. Durham Branch is in the process of con-
verting a second maker/tipping attachment for production of test market
quantities. Formulas for the preparation of tobacco blends and flavor, and
cigarette and wrapping material specifications will be forwarded to the
Department of Manufacture next week.
Durham Branch initiated production of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filter 100's Ciga-
rettes on Thursday for the Bingbamton, NY, test market opening on August 8.
Cigarettes have been received and are undergoing complete laboratory analysis
to ensure that all quality parameters are on target.
- Durham Branch completed production of introductory requirements of
LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filter 100's Cigarettes for the Binghamton, NY, test market.
Laboratory monitoring indicates all quality parameters were maintained in
accordance with specifications. Smoke delivery averaged ll.8-mg "tar" and
0.99-mg nicotine.
Development work to improve the smoking appeal of Project AFC cigarettes
continues. Models delivering 9-mg "tar" have been prepared utilizing a
standard monoacetate filter tip and a dual filter incorporating charcoal
paper for evaluation of taste characteristics by Laboratory smokers.
Additional models were prepared at the Laboratory this week to firmly establish
product specifications for Project LSL-100'S cigarettes, Our recommendation
for "Lights" versions of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar King Size and 100's will be
forwarded in the near future.
- Our recommended models and report surmmarizing development and
consumer testing of Project LSL king-size and i00 cigarettes were forwarded
on Tuesday. Results of consumer testing indicate that the products have
competitive smoking appeal with leading low "tar" brands. The king-size
product is 83 nnn in length with a circumference of 24.9 mm and delivers 8 mgs
"tar" and 0.7 mgs nicotine. The 10B n~ product has a circumference of 24.4 n~n
and delivers 9 mgs "tar" and 0.8 mgs nicotine. Both models utilize a modified
version of our standard LUCKY STRIKE LOW Tar Filter tobacco blend.
Based on our conversations of July 29, laboratory work has been initiated for
development of additive-free king-size (l-mg "tar" yield) and i00 mm (5-mg
"tar" yield) cigarettes. Reference to product development relating to this'
work will he conducted under R & D project code AFC-C.
For differentiation purposes, project code AFC-T has been established for
work relating to development of a 9-mg "tar" yield i00 mm product. Work in
this area during the week was centered on preparation of additional model
cigarettes containing moncacetate filter tips and low carbon dual tips for
taste evaluations among in-Company smokers.

June 24 - SIR has located 75 female smokers of ultra-low "tar" 100 mm
products requested for consumer testing of Project CS cigarettes prepared
with LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filters tobacco blend. Cigarettes were delivered
to SIR on Thursday for placement. Top-line data are expected during the
week of July 4.
- Development of a model i00 ~m cigarette to serve as a "Lights"
version of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filter 100's has been initiated. Design
parameters consist of filter tip and tipping overwrap lengths of 27 ~n and
32 mm, respectively, with a circumference of 24.4 m~. "Tar" delivery is
being targeted at 9 mg per cigarette.
Development of a model cigarette for Project AFC continues with evaluation of
alternate blend formulations designed to enhance taste characteristics.
Consumer product test results conducted previously with 5- and 9-mg "tar"
delivery models are being reviewed for potential guidance in this project.
- Top-line data from consumer testing of Project CS cigarettes prepared
with LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar tobacco blend indicate a preference for this model
over Models CN-21A and CS-IA (CARLTON blend). Testing was conducted among
female smokers of CARLTON 100's and competitive i00 ~ ultra-low "tar" products
demograhically similar to panelists who participated in the previous CS
study conducted in ~arch. SIR's full report will be available late next
week for comprehensive analysis.
Preliminary model Project LSL-100's cigarettes designed to yield 9-mg "tar"
were prepared on Thursday. Product is undergoing laboratory analysis to
establish target physical parameters and specifications.
Jul 15 - SIR's consumer test report for Project. CS cigarettes prepared
wlth LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar tobacco blend was recelved on Thursday. Oomparl-
son of test results with a previous CS study in March indicates this model
is preferred over Model CO-21A and CS-IA (CARLTON blend). Model cigarettes
and our recommendation for Project CS filter cigarettes will be forwarded
in the near future
We acknowledge approval of marketing plans to test market Project OS filter
and menthol cigarettes in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Grand Rapids,
Michigan, with first shipments to trade on October 17.
Tentative product specifications for Project LSL-100's cigarettes have been
established. The model is prepared with LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar blend con-
taining 18% FET-55G and achieves 9-mR "tar" delivery through utilization
of a high efficiency filter tow item in combination with filter tip air
dilution of approximately 35%. The cigarette is 100-mm by 24.4-mm circum-
ference with filter and tipping lengths of 27- and 32-n~n, respectively.
Additional cigarettes are being prepared to verify target specifications.
- Our reco~ended model and report su~arizing development and con-
s~mler product testing of Project CS filter cigarettes were forwarded on
Wednesday. Consumer test results indeate Model LS filter to be highly
competitive in taste characteristics with a broad universe of ultra-low
"tar" brands. The product is 99 mm in length with a circumference of
23.0 mm and incorporates a filter tip air attenuation system designed to
yield a smoke delivery of 6-mg "tar" and 0.6-mg nicotine per cigarette.

May 13 (Contd) - Development work to improve the smoking appeal of
Project AFC cigarettes continues. Models have been prepared incorporating
specific Bright and Burley strip grades in AFC-26 blend to establish
influence of tobacco types on dryness and smoke taste characteristics.
- Additional Project AFC tobacco blends designed to increase nico-
tine delivery in the smoke are being prepared utilizing specific Bright
and Burley strip grades. Cigarettes will be evaluated versus Model 26
for effect on dryness and taste characteristics.
- Our summary report covering development work and consumer
testing of Project AFC cigarettes was forwarded on Monday, Results of
this study indicate a standoff in preference between Models 26 (ATC
blend) and 38 (Silk Cut formulation),
SIR's consumer test report for 8-mg "tar" delivery Project LSL cigarettes
was received on Tuesday. The study indicates differences in the two
products are not statistically significant, however~ primary panel indi-
cators reflect a persistent trend favoring Model 2A prepared with LUCKY
STRIKE Low Tar Filters tobacco blend. The report and our overview will
be forwarded in the near future.
Design parameters for Project BD king size and I00 ~n filter cigarettes
incorporating LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filters blend have been established
for Laboratory-prepared models, Cigarettes will be fabricated at Durham
Branch to verify these tentative specifications.
June 3 - Research personnel were at Durham Branch on Thursday to assist
in the preparation of Model CS cigarettes incorporating LUCKY STRIKE Low
Tar Filters tobacco blend. A single product consumer test will be con-
ducted for comparative evaluation versus previous studies of Projeet CS
cigarettes prepared with CG and CARLTON blends.
We acknowledge approval of marketing plans to achieve national distribu-
tion of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filters Cigarettes.
June i0 - Analyses of Project CS cigarettes incorporating LUCKY STRIKE
Low Tar Filters blend casing and flavoring prepared at Durham Branch
last week indicate smoke deliveries and physical parameters are on
target. Arrangements are being made with SIR to locate 75 female
smokers of CARLTON and competitive lg0 rmn products for consumer testing.
Contingency development work has been initiated to establish product
specifications for Project BD king-size and 1O0 n~ cigarettes at 24.0-mm
circumference. Prototype models are being designed for both style ciga-
rettes with target "tar" deliveries of i0 and 15 mg.
June 17 - Our summary report covering development work and consumer
of g-mg "tar" delivery Project LSL cigarettes was forwarded on
Wednesday. Results of this study indicate a preference for LUCKY STRIKE
Low Tar blend over the experimental CO formulation.
SIR is in the process of locating smokers for consumer testing of 6-mg
"tar" delivery Project CS cisarettes prepared with LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar
tobacco blend. Monadie testlng will be conducted among smokers demo-
graphically similar to panelists who participated in s previous CS study
in March.

competitive king size cigarettes in the 7- to 9-mg "tar" range.
A ril 22 - Top-line data from consumer testing of Project AFC Models
~blend) and 36 (Silk Cut formulation) indicate that the two
products are very similar in taste characteristics and smoking appeal.
Primary indicators continue to reflect that our additive-free models
would be accepted by domestic cigarette smokers~ SIR's full report
will be available during the week of May 2 for in-depth study.
SIR is in the process of locating two groups of 75 panelists for monadie
testing of 8-mg "tar" delivery Project LSL cigarettes. Each group will
be composed of smokers of competitive king-size products in the 7- to 9-mg
"tar" range.
First shipments to the trade of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filters Cigarettes
will begin on Monday in the Tidewater area of Virginia.
- SIR indicates they have located 150 smokers of king-size
competitive products in the 7- to 9-mg "tar" range requested for consumer
testing of two Project LSL model cigarettes. Products were delivered
to SIR on Tuesday for their distribution. Initial top-line data are
expected during the week of May 9.
Our summary report covering development work and consumer testing of
Project CS filter cigarettes was forwarded today. Results of this
study indicate a strong preference for Model CG-21A versus Model CS-IA
(CARLTON blend).
First shipments to the trade of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filters Cigarettes
in the Wave III-83 expansion area (States of Alabama, Alaska, California,
Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington) will begin
on Monday.
- SIR's consumer test report for Project AFC Models 26 (AT~blend)
8 (Silk Cut formulation) was received on Thursday. Amont the cross
section of smokers, the two models are considered comparable. We continue.
to be encouraged by smoker acceptance of taste characteristics, however,
this study indicates dryness and amount of taste to be areas for improve-
ment. The report and our overview of the study will be forwarded in the
near future.

Branch this week. Cigarettes are undergoing laboratory analysis prior to
consumer testing versus AFC-38 (Silk Cut).
March 18 - Analyses of Project AFC model cigarettes - AFC-26 (ATC blend)
an~-28 (Silk Cut blend) 9repared and packaged at Durham Branch
indicate physical, chemical, and smoke yields are on target. Arrange-
ments are being made with SIR to locate 150 smokers of CARLTON and
competitive i00 mm ultra-low "tar" products for consumer testing.
First shipments to the trade of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filters Cigarettes
in the Wave 1-83 expandien areas will begin on Monday. We acknowledge
approval of Marketing's plans to further expand distribution in Wave 111-83
markets (States of Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia. Hawaii,
Nevada, Oregon and Washington) with first shipments on May 2.
March 25 - SIR's full report on consumer testing of Project CS filter
~8arettes was received on Wednesday. In summary, Model CG-21 is
clearly and without question the preferred product versus Model CS-I
(CARLTON blend) among the universe of participants, which includes
approximately 35% CARLTON 10O's smokers. CARLTON smokers in the study
perceived the two products to be similar and equally acceptable in taste
characteristics. A more detailed report will be forwarded in the near
future.
Development of a model klng-size cigarette to serve as a "Lights"
version (8-mg "tar") of LUCKY STRIKE Low Tar Filters has been
initiated under project code "LSL." Work is in progress to firmly
establish product specifications and schedules for consumer testing.
March 31 - SIR is in the process of locating two groups of 75 panelists
monadic testing of 5-mg "tar" delivery model AFC-26 (ATO blend) and
Model AFC-38 (Silk Cut blend) cigarettes. Each group will be composed of
25 CARLTON 100's smokers and 50 smokers of 10S ~m competitive products in
the 4- to 6-mg "tar" range.
Specifications and design parameters for Project LSL cigarettes have been
established. Prefabrication of tobacco blends have been initiated at the
Laboratory in preparation for fabrication for model cigarettes next week.
As per our discussions last Friday in New York, we are pointing to the
lash week in April to have product available for consumer testing.
- SIR has located 150 smokers of CARLTON 100's Cigarettes and
1O0 mm competitive products in the 4- to 6-mg "tar" ranse as requested
for consumer testing of two Project AFC model cigarettes. Product was
delivered to SIR on Wednesday for their distribution. Initial top-line
data are expected during the week of April 18.
