11. Proje+ct POLD: ll;esults of the! product placement test conducted in Northern
Virginia/Maryland indicate that BOLD is rated more favorably than Carlton/Now on
several liking-related scales. When compared to the 1990 study, the current white-
tipped BOLD was rated as smoother, less harsh~ and less irritating than the pre ious
BOLD model.
POL's 0594 and remakes of 0592 and 0593 were completed and released for testing.
BOLD prototypes with: the standard casing system and a Half-Nic type casing system
(both w'ithout aftercut) were subjectively evaluated. Panel results indiicated no
improvement with the Half hiic type casing.
2: Low Sidestream Program;.
-Su>DersliTns Single Wrap: Sidestream visibiliRy measurements were made for single
wrap land doutile wrap POL test models. Compared to Marlboro Lights 100, each model
gave approximately 70% rediaction on the 8rport instrument. Conversion to the
single wrap is expected at: the end of 1wlay..
Plans have been formulated for the preparation, of' preliminary magnesite cigarette
models in different configurations to provide baseline data for further cigarette
development. 'TThe models will be made with the magnesite paper (45 g/m2 , ternary)
which, gives highest; sidestream visibility reduction on a typical Lotus-type
cigarette and~ the magnesite paper (55 g/na' , binary) which gives preferred
subj ectives:
Cigarettes were made with magnesite papers fmom, Ecusta at higher citrate levels
than previous sarnples. The two 45 glm2i ternary base sheet models gave about 70%
reductions in sidestream visibility compared'i to Marlbom Lights; two 55 g/m2'
binary models with slightly different base porositiies and!& one 45 gIm2 binary base
sheet model gave 50-60% reductionsi The ash flaking on the ternary papers was
considered excessive.

3. Benson &' Hedpes KS: POL 0475, B&H KS FF1Vienthol~ MB4B filler, 2.0 tar/puff, 0.07
menthol/puff, was rejected due to high tar and men thol and~ remade. The remade model
delivered 2.0 tar/puff and 0:07' menthol/puff and was shipped 5i/17 .
POL 0483, B&H' KS FF Menthol; B&H' filler, 1.8 tar/puff, 0.07 menthol/puff, was
rejected due to hzghi menthol and remade. The remade: modeldelivered 1.7 tar/puff'
and 0.07 menthol/puff and! was shipped 5/17..
POL 0485; Marlboro Lights Menthol, with cork tipping was made in the Semiworks andd

4. Marlbo~rolMedium;~
- Marlboro 1wlediumiKS FTB': Productaon start-up began at the itrlanufacturing,Center on.
4/29/91. Ventilation averaged about 2-3% low during start-up, and the cigarette
paper was changed from 19 sec to 16 sec in order to reduce the average tar. QA
analysis indicates the brand'is averaging 1.43: tar/puff after the cigarette paper
change. Cigarette production as of 5/28/91 stands at 504 mallaom
- Marlboro Medium KS SP: Production start-up began at the Manufacturing Center on
5/5/91. Ventilation averaged about 2-3°l0 low during start-up, and the cigarette
paper was changed from 1'9~ sec to 16 sec oni 5/12/91 in order to reduce the average
tar. QA analysis ind2cates the brand is averaging 1.39 tar/puff after the
cigarette paper cliange. Cigarette production as of 5/28/91 stands at 545 million.
Cigarette production has been suspended until additional production lrabels have,
been manufactured. Production should resume the first week of June.
- Marlboro~~ Mied'iusn~ 1I00''s;~ Semiworks request~~ for~~ prototype'~& was~ submdtted whiichh
targeted this new brand for 1.2 - 1.3 tar/puff withialtar target of 12.0' mg.
5. Project ART: Status for the elimination of PG from the pre-extract2on, casing for
the ART program is as follows:
. otting Tests: Comploted; results to be' reported by Quality Engineering. Flavor
Technology and personnel ffromi Bermuda 100 are reviewing the process and the
application of casing for possible causes which may have contributedi to the:
increase in spotting observed in this series of tests. Plans are to extractt
filler using the "old process" as weld' as the "new process", and to produce
cigarettes from each.of these productaon.runs for evaluation.

- Filler Analytical and Cigarette Analytical: In progress; completion~ report to be
prepared by Flavor Technology.
- SubJective Smokingi. In progress; to be reported by Flavor Technology.
- Hllf-Ni Cigarettes (1i00m2n) were produced'1 for the development of a Half-Nic
product with a lower puff count than 9.5 puffs/cigarette. Cigarettes made
incliuded two circumferences (24.0/2x1.S) with, 215 ET added' back at 20, 35 and 50%
and 24.8 circumference models using recommended cigarette papers with extracted
filler using 2'15' ET added back at 20 and 35%. Filter investigartions are also
being pursued.
6. Ptoject Grain: POL 0381 (50~'~o reduction of alcohol in the burley topi casing, in
Marlboro cigarettes) was found to be not different from a controlMarllboro.
POL's 0397 and 0398 were made in the Semiworks to evaluate 100% ETOH reduction in
the BTC'on Marlboro cigarettes. Semiworks Merit KS filler was processed to evaluate
100% ETOH reduction in the BTC: Cigarettes are being made for internal evaluations.
7. Dry Flavor lleplacement: After equipment checkout and calibration~ implementation of
the dry flavor replacement is scheduled for startl;up June 12, 1991, at Park 500.
Initial production of P.LB with the replacements will be monitored by FTD~personnel!
EvaluatRons of the dry flavor replacement formulations in RCB produced in the Cast
Leaf lab are in progress. Production trials at the BL Plant are scheduled for June.
8. Monadic ItesearclZc
- Marlboro Monadic Panel: POL 0366 (Winston) has been analyzed. This is the new
Winston~ which has! the new blend and filter construction. The Winston smokers
rated the new Winston lower on liking and less intense than the older Winstons.
Bo th the Marlboro soft pack and box smokers rated! the new Winstons lower on liking
than the older Winstons.
- 85 mrn Nonmenthol Monadic Panel; POL 02017 (Virginia Slims KS) has closed out
The results showed that the Virginia Slims KS with a 23.0 mm circumference was
rated as expected' on liking; and strength compared to 24.8 mm circumference
cigarettes with similar tar/puff and tipping color.
- 4'-

PQL 0'2011 (Camel) has closed out. 'The results shouve& that, based! on its tar per
puff and tipping paper, the Camel cigarettes were rated as expected on strength,
but not on liking. The lilcing, ratings were significantly lower than expected.
POL 02018: (Virginia Slims Lights KS) ha& closed~ out. T'he, results showed! that the
Virginia Slims Ligfits KS with a, 23.0 m4ni circumference was rated lower on liking
and stre~ngthi than eigaretteswithsimilar tar per puff and tnpping color with a
24.8 mm circumference.
- 100mm Nonmenthol Monadic Panel: Winston (POL 0575) has closed. Results showed
that no significant difference in strength was found betweeni Winston and a
previous Winston (0556). Based on tar per puff and tipping color, the strength
and liking ratings were not significantly different from expected'.
- 85mm Menthol Monadic Panel: POL 0474 (MB4B'filler, full flavor/high menthol) has
closedi Results on liking showed that this MB4B filler/high men thol model was not
rated significantly different fromi the B&H filler/high menthol model by the total
panel. InI terms of the supplemented panel, results on liking showed' that Newport
smokers' rating of the MB4B filler/high menthol model was higher (not significant)
than their rating of the B&H filler/high menthol model and Marlboro.
9 : Paper Development:
- Banded Papers: Banded paper trials using the modified rotogravure type
application device at Beloit are scheduled for the week of June 117. All the
materials required for the bandedl paper trials have been delivered.
Cigarettes were made in the Semiworks with conventional' paper printed by Kimberly-
Clark with bands of Avicel. The mainstream deliveries were significantly higher
than for the same paper control without bands. Cigarettes have been submitted for
burn rate evaluation. A small_ quantity of paper was coated in-house with
colloidali cellulose using the modified gravure coater attached to the size press.
Good band definition was achieved, and burri rate control was very good att
application levels of 3.5 g/m' . This paper will be slit, and machine-made
cigarettes will be made.
10. Filt,er Develogment:
- Web Develo ~~ment: T'he next PM web mil'll trial is tentatively scheduled at James
River's Gouverneur mill the third week in, July, pending installat2on of new pumps
and an, agitator. These pieces of equipment will allow CA dispersion, at <1.5% in a
-5-

low shear environment, conditions determined~ to be necessary during trials at
James River's Neenah research facility. A chemical dispersant will be used to
improve CA dispersion. In addition, evaluations are also being, conducted on
variables (pH,, water hardness and dispersant level) that might influence the
dispersioni of CA.
- Carbon Studies: Experiments are in progress to determine the amount of water
adsorbed by carbon at various relative humidities as a function of tinne. These
experiments will support setting carbon moisture specifications at levels which
willl minimize moisture/weight changes due to equilibration during storage and/or
manufacturing.
111. Intern+atf onalr~
an-.
- P1114SL 100 ~.FrB': Prototypes were made in Semiworks using production filters supplied
by Filtrona UK (24.60 mm circumference and 26,000 CORESTA plugwrap) to finalize
ventilation and, tipping paper pressure drop specifications: Results were received
from the factory trial run on 5/8/91, and, product specifications for PM Super
Lights 100 Regular FTB' were issued to Operations Services. Initial production
began on 5/19/91 to produce the order of _85' million cigarettes. The, cigarettes
are being monitored on a shift-by-shift basis for analytical and subjective
acceptability.
- Mnrlboro Program: Marlboro and Marlboro Lights cigarette production began the
week of 5/13/91 with the fine-tuned filter specifacations in Japan Tobacco's
Odawara factory. Since the change to the 55% offshore/45% domestic blend in~
March, both products have been running slightly, high in tar delavery. This filter
modification will bring the products back to the target tar values (Marlboro 15.0
mg TIOJ tar/iVMarlboro Lights 11.0 mg TIOJ tar)1
- Parliament Casing Consolidation: Results were received for the Danchi II
Parliament KS Casing Consolidation evaluation. The following models tested were: O
Parliament KS @ 11 mg,- Control Bright Casing
N
Parliament KS @ 11 mg - Modifiedl Bright Casing
~
Parliament KS @ 9 mg - Control Bright Casing
Parliament KS @ 9 mg - Modified Bright Casing, i^+
~
~
-6-

Among combined smoker groups, results showed neither type of bright casing nor tar
level had a significant effect on~ liking scores. Strength ratings increased
significantly due to the effect of the Modified Bright Casing.
A retest of the Parliament 100 (12 mg, TIOJ tar) casing consolidation evaluation
has been scheduled for Damchi Panel II(E-R886).
Kor a
- Parliament Lights KS (FR"B): A factory trial will be condiucted on 5J31/91'at
Stocktoni Strea Both the regular and "softer" Parliament Lights KS versibns will
be produced. The initial order of 40 million units will be produced in late
June/early July in ordbrto meet the market launch date of August, 1991.
Hong Kong:
- Marlboro 83, mm Menthol FTB: A 3 million cigarette order for Marlboro 83 mm
Menthol FTB at 15 mg UK tar was produced in Louisville and released for shipment.
The launch in Hong Kong is scheduled for June, 1991.
- Black Tow Eliminatiion Program: Appnoval was received to replace black filter tow
with white tow on, charcoal-filtered cigarette brands. The four brands affected
are:
Parliament 100 SP/FTB (export & domestic):
Virginia, Slims Lights 1100 F17B Charcoall (Japan)
Lark Deluxe Milids 100 F'TrB (export)
Multifilter KS'SP (domestic)
- Specifications for Virginia Slims Lights 100 Charcoal and all of the Parliament
brands (domestic and export) affected by the elnminationi of black tow have been
issued. Meetings were held the week of 5/20I'91 with R&D, Operations Services and
Purchasing to discuss the logistics of the tow elimination program.
12. Environm+enttd Sltudnes:
- Li i di A r r EMuent Disposal: The vessels and tanks for the scaled-up
activated sludge system have arrived with pumps, agitators, with other
miscellaneous equipment expected by early June. Installation will begin mid-June.

Evaluations of other disposal technolbgies are being planned. P1ViI Engineering will
assist us in evaluating thermal incineration of normal andi concentrated effluent.
A new initiative on, chemical destruction techniques has been made with Chemical
Research to: look for small-scale, batchi reactioni schemes that can handle
concentrated nicotine solutions, possibly making use of previously developed ionn
exchange technology.
- Primary VOC R;edti+ctions: Several scenarios were investigated to determine the
potential impact of Project Grain on VOC emissions and perrnitft requirements for the
Cabarrus primary expansion. New EPA rules under the amended Clean Air Act call
for the incllwsion of fugitive emissions in all permitting which will make ethanol':
reduction in our flavor systems much more important.
13. Cast Leaf Process Development:
- Cast Leaf Pilot Plant: Construction will begin on July 8, and the Pilot Plant
will be completed in October. The final layout of the Will'2ams Grinder in D~ Pilot
Plant and' the dryer exhaust scrubber in C Pilot Plant will be determined in early
June_
- Cast Leaf Development: Flavor formulations were developed for gwar gnm base
sheets which are subjectively similar to RLB and a combination of RLB' and RLTC.
The RLB type was substituted for 50% and 100% RLB in a U.S. 1Wiarlborp cigarette
construction for further subjective evaluation. Significant sheet quality
improvements were achieved with the inclusion of refined stem or wood pulp in gtaarr
gum base sheet.
-.adiz; The trials scheduled for May have been: delayed until August due to labor
problems in Cadiz. No information is available on the installation of the
deaerator or eductor on which these trials depend. The Cadiz Plant will be shut
down for vacation during July.
- BL Plant~ Ca pacity Increase: A plan has been formulated to increase BL Plant
capacity by increasing belt speed and reducing tobacco particle size. A trial to
increase the belt speed from 330 fprn, by 10 ft/min every 1 2 weeks will begin on
June 7. Engineering will determine the potential of the present Williams Mill to
reduce particle size. We will: determine the solids increase potential associated
with the reducedlparticle size.
- Alternate! Sheet SuP ~ h'~ No further trials are planned in Venezuela until the
cause of the product darkening, is determined; investigations are in progress. The

BL Plant capacity increase program may obviate the need for further trials in
Venezuela.
Another triat was run at American Tobacco, Hammer Division, and the correct
solubles level was achieved. However, a coarser refining than desired was
necessary to achieve this solubles lbvell Cigarettes containing materiall from
this trial are being made for subjective evaluation.
A trial at Schweitzer's hlew Jersey plant and a trial at LTR with the same tobacco
lots used for the American trial are: schedulud for the weeks of June 3 and 13,
respectively.
- Operations Support: Production trials wiithi increased Burley stem (33% to 37:%))
were conducted at the BL Plant at the request of the Leaf Department. The
objective is to determine if higher Burley stem usage is an acceptable method of
reducing the Burley st= inventory.
14,. Primary~ Improvement ~Pro,gram..
- Steam Tunnel Evaluation: The Sagemuller steam tunnel has been received and is
scheduled for installation in the Semiworks endfng June 2, 1991. A test program
for the steaml tunnel evaluation has been prepared and issued. The project is on
schedule to generate ai recommendation by October 1'991 to support an inaplepentationn
decision at Cnbarrus fdr incorporating, steam tunnels prior to casing cylinders.
15. New Expanded Tobacco Program:
- Batch Gas Impregnation: Tests conducted to determine if there was a subjective
advantage to using lower tobacco feed OVs for the gaseous impregnation process
produced some significant findings. At 13% feed OV, higher tower exit OVs were
attained with only a minimal loss in tower exit CV, i.e. increasing the tower exit
OV' from approximately 2.5% to 6.5% resulted in only a 0.6 CV unit loss. Also, at
6:5% tower exit OV, changes in reducing sugars and alkalbids ~ across the tower were
found to be negligible. To investigate the impact of these results on
subjectives, 100% cigarettes have been fabricated for evaluation.
- Cbntinuous Gas Impr=atiion: Short-cycle impregnation tests have resulted in
successful impregnation of DIET feedstock at 15% OV in 30 seconds using gaseous
CO, at 850 psi. The feasibility of innpregpating tobacco in 30 seconds has also
eliminated the earlier opt2oni of continuously iaapregnat2ng, tobacco in a "conveyor
iimpregnator°'requiming 11.5 minutes.

- NIET'ProductEvaluations: BliendsofDlET,BLDET,andBFEThavebeenexpandedusing
gaseous and liquid CO, impnegnation for product evaluations: Marlboro cigarettes
have been made using DIET and NET for testing to establish subjective parity. Two
models, one with factory processed DIET and~ one with uncased hiET' (pilot plantt
expanded and humid air reordered in the laboratory), were POL evaluated. Results
showed parity between the two models. Two additional' Marlboro models; one with
cased DIET and one with cased IVET' ('both ETs expanded andi reordered in the: pilot
plant); have also been made for subjective evaluation.
16. Pro,keC FACT: Testing of the performance of the air treatment, system and room
ventilation system was conducted at the Benedum Center on IuSay 20. In summary,, the
full-scale smoking test in the Benedum: Lounge met the design criteria. In addition,,
the follbvnng, recommendations were made:
Install some sound deadening system to reduce the noise associated! with the exhaust
air fans.
Test the air conditioning system by supplying heat equivalent to 1!00 people and
measuring the A/C system performance! (temperature and relative humidity).
17. Sta& Mentii+ol:
-Mentlhol/Alginate Beads: Design of the pilot system for producing, smalll (<i00µ))
menthol/alginate beads has been completed and submitted~ to the shop for
fabrication. Quotations for fluidized-bed dryers have been received from two
vendors, and drying tests will be run in their labs as soon as a water slurry of
beads can be produced.
- Fluid JetS~stv em: The DOD (Drop-on-Demand) system for spraying a GMC solutiinnon
the tips of cigarettes has been installed on a Mark 9 ini the Semiworks, and
shakedown trials are in progress. Cigarettes from this process should be
available to begin product evaluation by mid-June.
. 1 C A program to develop, ai satisfactory application process for PoIyMIC;,
which is insoluble in alcohoI and water, has shown some promise. Po1y1wS1C
undergoes a meltitransition between 103 ° and 1130C, and the melt viscosity may be
low enough when heated to 120-1300C for hot melt applicat2oni to cigarette paper.
18. OO~tiical Processing: Significant progress has been made in, addressing an
intermittent hardarare malfunction whichi has persisted in the Osiris pack inspection
