Abstract
Discusses new product development meeting between Philip Morris and Concor Corp. Outlines the SCAN method of product development(Speculation, Calculation, Adoption, Networks) as applied to the subject "Products which the consumer will perceive as giving sensory, motor or anatomical (physiological) benefits of cigaret(sic) smoking." Identifies concept areas for further study, including Old Sage herbal cigarettes marketed to improve one's "Karma" or "health"; precombusted cigarettes with a two part capsule or aerosol container, cigaret(sic) mouth deodorant, inhalation of smoke through nose, tobacco plug or chunk tobacco drawn up through a pipe into the nose, promotion of pipe and cigar smoking, group smoking, and specific appetite inducers. Recommends pursuit of these ideas.

Mr. Conrath and his associates described the method they use in
developing.new product concepts and then presented a series of
new product areas which emanated from their study. The concept
method known as SCAN (Speculation, Calculation, Adoption, Networks)
was applied to the broad subject entitled, "Products which the
consumer will perceive as giving sensory, motor or anatomical
(physiological) benefits of cigaret smoking."
Product concept areas that emanated from the study by Concor
follow. Those subjects marked with an asterisk were identified
by P.M. attendees as worthy of future study and development of
new product ideas by Concor. Subjects not so noted are either
of no present interest or previously and/or presently under
development by P.M.
1. Woven or Chunk Tobacco: Preformed pipe plug, prefilled
Msposa e pipe pipette-type), etc. Problems regarding
varying pipe bowl sizes, packing firmness, and elimination
of pipe filling ritual by smoker.
2. Hollow-core Cigaret: Possibly make in extruded form.
D icu t i possible to overcome acceptable heat transfer.
3. Larger (Bia) Cigaret: Similar to cigar in shape and size.
"Wincliester" product by Reynolds Tobacco fulfills same
general concept.

4. "Wiffs" - Short Sweet Smoke: A short rod with long filter
similar to Russian type and recently one from Japanese
Monopoly.
*5. Old Sage Herbal Smoke: Scented cigaret made from natural
ingredients provi ing mild, sweet-burning smoke. Could be
oriented to improving ones "Karma" or "health." P.M. noted
that smokers seek nicotine in cigarets but product could be
potential for youth market. Herbal ingredients could be
used to compliment tobacco flavor or sidestream. By incor-
porating herbs at the filter end of the rod, the smoke will
provide a clean mouth feel and after-taste. Possibly effect
by micro-encapsulation of herbs.
6. Super Beverage for Extra Jolt: Concept is a beverage
possibly based on Kawa, used by Polynesians for a relaxant
mood or on Yoco, a beverage used by Indians for it benzedrine-
type component to provide stimulation.
7. Alpha-wave Tuning: Product concept involves electronic
recording of an individual's basic brain wave at a particularly
desirable physiological and psychological state for replay into
earphones of subject to provide an instant Nervana or pleasant
mood. Similar device presently being used in conjunction with
sale of water beds.
8. Snuff: Provision of premeasured amounts of snuff packaged
TLCe a cigaret, or straw, or in capsule form to overcome
social stigma attending use of the present package form.
Discussion noted possible provision in an aerosol. By
extrapolation, concept of tobacco formed like a pipe or
twisted cigars woven into a rope form presented and~ discussed.
*9. Precombusted Cigarets: Concept involves providing effects
6f cigaret smoke but not requiring lit cigaret. Concor
suggested a two-?art capsule or aerosol-type container
entitled, "Twist N, Shape'N, Snap'N, Sniff.'"' Capsule could
be activated by catalyst providing gas for inhalation as
stimulant. Possible area ofinterest but product needed
to fulfill concept.
10. A ua-Filter: Flavors (strawberry, banana, orange, lemon)
added to a filter. Other similar product application
included a tobacco juice on non-tobacco materials (e.g.,
lettuce leaf) or flavor booster for low tar cigarets.
*11. Cigaret-Mouth Deodorant: Achieve by use of herbs or
appropriate avorant. Could provide desirable effect
as first smoke of day but void of bad after-taste.
Flavorant could be on filter and not in smoke. Cigaret
with mouth deodorant for "lovers."

12. Non-Nicotine Safe Ci aret: Made of non-tobacco material.
Can inc u e st u ant ngredient in the filter to satisfy
physical craving.
13. Dr. Bill's Medicated Herb Smoke: Cigaret containing health
giving herbs, conceptually n ine with health promoted food
items. Possibly formulate and promote products for coughs,
asthma, headache, etc.
14. Systemic Regulators: Cigaret with constituents providing
mood regulation. Could be cigaret that signals change or
cigaret that promotes feeling like that after a cup of
coffee. Could be type that doctors would prescribe for
mental illness.
*15. Inhalation of Smoke Through Nose: On premise that nasal
hairs function as efficient filters for substances such as
tar, provide product in possibly coil form (similar to punk)
to generate smoke for nasal inhalation. Could include a
generator of a smoke-like or volatile substance not requiring
combustion. Holds potential for group participative smoking.
*16. "robacoa": Would be in form of plug or chunk tobacco with
co~busti&n product from same drawn up through a"y"-shaped
pipe device with the double ends inserted in the nose.
Similar to preceeding concept (15).
17. Heads Up: Nose drop containing stimulant as substitute
product for stimulating effect of cigaret smoking.
18. Stimulant Gum: To provide physiological effects of cigaret
smoke in an oral product (gum) which would break down after
specific time (7 minutes) to form a mass amenable to inges-
tion or ejection.
19. Su er-A ed Vinta e Tobaccos: A marketing item concept based
on promotion similar to special wines.
*20. Promote Pipe and Cigar Smokin : Possibly promote use through
women, as the vehicle to gett ng to men, in order to teach
people not to inhale cigarets. Product could be in form of
pipette for improved convenience, etc., over regular pipe
and pouch.
*21. Grou Smokin : Based on a common smoke generating source
conducive to supplying smoke to individual straws or tubes
for group participation after dinner or at social events.
Could contain after dinner flavors (brandies, etc.).

Page 4: dsh78e00
*22. Specific Appetite Inducers: Incorporate special herbs or
me cations in a cigaret form as appetite stimulants or
possibly for tension release. Especially for people who
live alone (elderly) or business men to stimulate appetite.
Alternate product to contain appetite suppressant ingredient.
23. Inhalable Ca sule: Capsule with chemical ingredients to
intensify effects of wine, liquor, etc.
24. "U* Front"-Methadone Maintenance Program: An inhaler
conta ning nicot e to provide sensory response similar
to that from cigarets.
25. Non-tobacco Snuff: Tablet or other product form providing
ingredient to raise blood sugar leve]: to give body induced
.high feeling similar to nicotine action.
Concor group will restudy starred concept subjects above to develop
more specific product potentials in these categories.
Next meeting with Concor representatives will be Tuesday, January
4, 1972, at 10, a.m. in "C" Conference Room.
