Product Design
We Want the Smoke PH Measured
Abstract
Description of proposed method for experimental smoke pH measurement. Whole smoke measurement in an aqueous solution with no Cambridge pad and no cold trap but good TPM recovery. Smoke pH value will reflects contribution of both vapor-phase and particulate-phase smoke. Initial pH measurements range between 4.5 and 5.5.
Fields
- Hypothesis
- Design changes over timeChanges in cigarette design over the past half century.
- FTC machine testing and ratingsDesign changes to achieve altered FTC smoke machine tar and nicotine ratings, with or without measured changes in human intake.
- Nicotine transport, transfer, and uptakeDesign changes which alter nicotine delivery or effect how the product causes and maintains dependence, including transfer of nicotine from tobacco to smoke, and uptake into the body.

HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD BE USED?
42 mg/cig, for Kentucky 1R4F reference cigarette
U
Smoke 10 cig. = 0.0095 mole x 22.4 Liter/mole = 0.212 Liter
U
The solubility of CO2 in water is 0.759 L/L water at 25 °C, 760 mm
Therefore, 0.212 Liter CO2/2x150mLx10"~ = 0.707

TPM loss is measured from the the weight differences of the Cambridge filter pad
placed behind the traps before and after 10 cigarettes were smoked.
TPM loss (%) was calculated from the TPM loss amount divided by the FTC TPM.
