Controlled Profile Cigaret - Layman'S Description
Abstract
Describes a new concept for a cigarette that would combine characteristics of "health" cigarettes with those of full-flavor cigarettes. The new cigarette would vary its delivery levels. It would give higher TPM at the beginning and less TMP towards the end of the cigarette. This would offset the increase in harshness as a smoker approaches the end of the cigarette and would "satisfy" the smoker "since a smoker essentially acquires this satisfactin during the early puffs and it will also reduce the last portion per puff tar inhaled." It aimed to be a reduced tar but full-flavored cigarette.

Coatroiled Profile Cigaret - Layman's Description
You have r8quested that I describe the Controlled Profile cigaret,
possible marketable points, etc. in Layman's terms. I think this
can beat be accomplished by ansnering the following questions:
iiBAT IS ?BE CONTR4LLM YROFILB CIGAIET?
The Controlled Profile cigaret is a cigaret that will be completely
different than any other cigaret in the narlcetplsce today. It is
a cigaret that +Pill giw a different i.ewl of puFf-bf-puff tar as
the cigaret is smoked. The main differences of the ci,garet can be
described as follows: The two eztreme types of filter ci~;arets
that exist in the marketplace today are the so-called flavor
cigarets such as Marlboro and Winston and at the other end of the
scale reduced tar "heaYth" cigarets that have air diluted filters
such as True. On a per-puff basis, tha flavor cigaxeta deliver
full-bodied puffs increasing in ma}paitude along the cigaret as
the cigaret is smoked. The air diluted "health" cigaret has a
siailar pattern of increasing tar but the absolute level of tar
per puff is much loxar for the simple reason that air is draura
through the filter as the smoker puffs. Total tar delivered for
the complete cigaret is therefore significantly less than that
of a flavor cigaret. The air dilution described takes place from
the first puff.
The Controlled °zofile cigaret vi21 be a ciZaret that coobiaes
the major attribztss of tbe above two types of cigarets. The
flavor cigaret delivers early fl.avorful puffs. The air diluted
c£garet delivers lover tar per puff by air diluting the sooke.
The Controlled Prafils cigaret will deliver to the smoicer early
flavorful puffs and aidway through the cigaret will autoaatically
besi.n to dilute thw smoke to zeduce and "control" the tar iahaled
duiing the latter portion. TL* composite cigaret (Controlled
Profile cigared) wi1i satisfy the ssaoaer since c smokQr essentially
acquires this satisactian during the ear::y puffs and it a£!.1 also
reduce the last portion 3sr kufft tar inhaled. Therefore, a
^aat"LLed -Prcfiie ci.-aret will maLntxin a control!a3 rate of tar

WHY IS TSE COi4T.t0LLED Y&OFILE CIC,A= AN IMR.0PEME7T2
1. It will satisfy the full flavor cigaret saoker when he requires
satisfaction giving hf.m 4-6 normaL fuil-bodied auffa. Then it
will avtos.atica2ly reduce tar delivery of latter puffs while he
conticuea to sao a.
2. Harshness level builds along a ciaaret similar to the iacrease
ia tar. Last puffs should be as enjoyable as early ;;uffs elim-
is3ating the Eiarshness buildup.
3. The sryoker can see the chan,-,e in the cigaret as s.asll holes
in the cigaret rod coated with a white =iLg ssill dar3ten and
become readily visibLe as the citaret is s=oked. This visual
evidence of the opening of air dilution holes can conceivably
give a psychological lift to the smoker.
Poseibl'r "SarScetable Points
Two eztreme classifications of snokers exist as underlined below.
However, the Qajority of filter ci-aret s®oicers probably fall
between the tezs groups. Recent surveys show the very high avatren#ss
of filter srolr, ers with :esF.act to a reduced tar cib, aret.

"Aeat'tis" Smokers
1. LoAaered tar delivery at last puffs sehare it does the most good
2. Can see diirtion taking place
3. Can nov have flavor in a reduced tar cissaret
4. Cooler smoke (to be confircaed)
I feel that we should make no referene to reduced coal temperatL:re
as it ra=ains to be confiraed. We should leava this aspect of th,a
cigarat to eources outside the ci.aret industry oho feel this to be
an attribute of the Controlled Profile cigaret in the smoicing and
health controversy.
