Control Profile Harshness Evaluation
Abstract
Reports results of study to assess harshness ratings and taste level ratings at different measured rod lengths (6 mm, 19 mm, 32 mm, 45 mm)for two experimental controlled profile cigarettes and a control Winston. Controlled profile cigarettes showed reduced harshness in comparison with Winston, and taste level patterning followed harshness.

Controll Profile Harshness Evaluation
Date: Jiu 1 y 7, 1970
The following tabulati'on contains the results of the recent
series of Control Profile tests conducted with six descriptive
panelists.
The method of testing constisted of indlivid'ually testing
each panelist in a booth test siituation in which a lit cigarette
was proffered to the panelist inserted in a cardboard cuff about
tenii nches i n d'iiameter. Hol'idi nig the cardboard cuff the panel i st
was instructed to take two puffs from the tendered cigarette and
make a harshness judgment on a 01-10 scale and a taste level jiudg-
ment onia 0-10 scale. The cigarettres were pre-smoked by means of
a squeeze bulb with one-minute intervals between~puffs. The
number of puffs requiired to reach each test point has been
recorded but is not being reported here. The values for each
planellist for each cigarette were obtained by pre-smoking to the
6 mm, the 19 mm, the 32 mm and 45 mm length, these represeniting
mid-poinits of the four quarters of the consumed rod. The order
in which smokiing at these varilou!s lengths took place was system-
atically randomized across subjiects. The tabulati, onibelow contaiins
the mean harshness rating,s for the six subjects for each of the
two experiimental cigarettes and the control Winston.
Taste level ratings are available but not suibmitted here
because of thei'ir questionable relevance. The patterning is
essenitially that of the harshness ratings.
