McCeady SUBJECT': Laboratory Experiment of Ammonia Additive to Tobacco A laboratory experiment spraying various concentrations of ammonia on tobacco was carried out in order to~find out how much ammonia actually remained on the tobacco and itss correlation with TVB' and leaf pH. The percent ammonia inn the tobacco samples was determined by the standard pro- cedure described in report Accession Number 831. Leaf analyses were done by H. Bogue and his gr•Dup. Two sets of sampl:es were prepared by spraying 01.5%,. 1.0i$, 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively of ammonia in water and in ethanol on Kent Golden Light cut tobacco. The spraying was done in the open. Samples were analyzed for ammonia 2'hours,_ 72 hours and two weeks after application. The results of the analyses are presentedlin the attached table. The ammonia data represents an average of three determinations. The data indicates the apparent loss of ammonia immediately after spraying. The loss was greater -when the ammonia was added in alcohol. The addition of 01.2'% ammonia produced a TuB' of about 0.70V, which is similiar to Philip Morris products. Leaf pi3 on the sample with 0.2% increased ammonia is the same as was found on True Blue blend'with 1.5% added nicotine. f rFurther tests will be made to determine the stability of the ammonia additions and correlation with tl!Le nicotine augmentation project.
