In 1988, after several years' absence, menswear was once again included in the Benson and Hedges
Fashion Awards, New Zealand's mahor fashion design competition. The menswear section was one of
seven awards for independent designers this year, each offering a prize of $2,500, together with a
trophy and certificate. Maysie Bestall-Cohen, co-ordinator of the Benson and Hedges Awards, says
that in the late 1970s "the standards of menswear had become very disappointing". In 1979 the judges
felt they could not award a prize to menswear because the entires were "a complete embarassment".
This year, however, Bestall-Cohen thinks the menswear was just amazing. "It's been one of the
highlights of the awards. Each year, we reconsider all the categories of awards.
