Dr. Helmut Schievelbein
Author : P.N. I,ee
Date : 29.8.79
Dr. Helmut Schievelbein is a well known cardiologist working as Director
of the German Heart Centre in the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Bio-
chemistry of Munich University. He has published widely on smoking and on
nicotine and a list of references to some of his more relevant work is
attached.
He has close associations with the German industry. 15 years ago he was
director of the Tobacco Research Institute in Hamburg for a year before he left
for Munich and Dr. Pl. Dontenwill took over. More recently he has been and
still is a member of the Council on Smoking and Health set up by the Verband
about the time that the laboratories in Hamburg were sold. He is not however
a paid consultant to the Verband as I understand it.
He is also a member of a NHO smoking and health group and attended the
Stockholm World Conference in that capacity.
The paper "Science no longer in demand?" (TA1123) has now been published
in the Munchner Nedizinische Wochenschrift. Dr. F. Adlkofer of the Verband told
me that he and Schievelbein wrote it jointly. Adlkofer said Schievelbein is an
honest scientist with clear ideas - Schievelbein is not worried by the liaison
(

with the German tobacco industry, feeling that he is saying what he believes and
not what the industry wants him to say. Adlkofer also said however that on
occasion he felt Schievelbein to be not completely up to date with recent
scientific work and that some of his work tended to be superficial.
