Stronger action in the fight against tobacco
Ezcellent news for all those involved in smoking control activities!
The World Health Organization Executive Board at its January meeting
issued the strongest statement they have ever made on the hazards of
tobacco use.
"Cigarette smoking is the major avoidable cause of ill health
and premature mortality in countries where it is widespread.
Since the evidence of a causal relationship between the use
of tobacco, whether for smoking or chewing and ill health is
now overwhelJning.... the onus of proving that tobacco use is
not a cause of disease should be on the tobacco industry
itself."
The Executive Board has drafted a resolution for adoption at the
General Assembly in May in which they express a deep concern for the
current pandemic of smoking and other forms of tobacco use. We have
attached the press release and the resolution for your information.
Both documents are full of good quotes which can be used in your
campaign.
Also attached is a sunanary of the report "WHO Programme on Tobacco or
Health". The full paper consists of 46 pages and in a concise manner
covers the smoking issue in depth. We will be happy to send you a
copy if you are interested.
