CIGARETTES
1. SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION
This standard is concerned with cigarettes manufactured from
tobacco and prepared by mechanical methods.
2. COMPLEMENTARY REFERENCES
Gulf Standards approved by the Organization and concerned
with methods for test of tobacco and its products.
3. DEFINITIONS
Cigarettes: One of tobacco products ready for smoking. It
is a longitudinal naper roll of a cylindrical or an oval
cross-section which contains pieces of tobacco arranged in a
manner suitable for direct smoking. It is produced with or
without a filter tip.

The following characteristics shall be met in cigarettes
mechanically manufactured from tobacco:
4.1 It shall be clean, free from impurities, molds and foreign
plant or non-plant materials.
4.2 It shall be free from insects and their eggs or their live
larva.
4.3 It shall be free from protuberances and superfluities when
cuttiaC.

4.4 The burning of paper and tobacco shall be homogeneous and the
ember shall not be easily separated from the cigarette during
burning.
4.5 The amount of tobacco shall be evenly distributed throughout
the whole length of the cigarette.
4.6 The width of tobacco pieces used shall not be less than 0.5
mm and not more than 0.8 mm.
4.7 The apparent density of cigarette tobacco shall not be less
than 0.25 gm/cm3.
4.8 The amount of fine tobacco passing through a 425 micron sieve
shall not exceed 5% of the tobacco used in cigarette.
4.9 It is not allowed to use cigarette end tobacco or any tobacco
subjected to any treatment which alters its essential
characteristics in manufacturing of cigarettes.
4.10 The adhesion of cigarette wrapping paper shall be precise at
adhesion line and also between the filter and the tobacco
column and shall be free adhesion defects.
4.11 Loose tobacco from cigarettes ends shall not exceeds 0.8% for
non-filtered cigarettes and 0.3 for filter tipped cigarettes.
4.12 The weight of cigarette wrapping paper shall not exceed 5% of
the cigarette weight (excluding for the weight of filter and
its wrapper in the case of filtered cigarettes).
4.13 The length of tobacco column shall not be less than 60 mm.
4.14 The moisture content of the tobacco used in manufacturing of

cigarettes content shall not be less than 10% and not more than 13%.

4.15 The total "ash content and the acid-insoluble ash content of
the tobacco used in manufacturing of cigarettes shall not
exceed 18% and 3% successively on the dry weight basis.
4.16 The silica content of the tobacco used in manufacturing of
cigarettes shall not exceed 2% on a moisture content basis of 13%.
4.17 The nitrogen content of the tobacco used shall not exceed
2.2% on the dry weight basis.
4.18 The circumference of the cigarette shall be between 23-30 mm.
4.19 The tolerance in length and circumference for the one kind or
batch of cigarettes in a random sample shall not exceed +
1.5% for length and 2% for circumference.
4.20 The tolerance in tobacco weight if cigarettes (in a random sample of
the same kind or batch shall not exceed + 5% of the average tobacco
cigarette weight (on the dry weight basis) of the sample drawn.
4.21 The filteration efficiency for filters shall not be less than
35% for filtered cigarettes.
4.22 Draw resistance when complete cigarette has been smoked shall
range between 70-160 mm water column for filtered cigarettes
and between 40-110 mm water column for non-filtered cigarettes.
4.23 Additives content to tobacco used in manufacturing cigarettes
shall not exceed 15% on dry weight basis and it shall not
produce any material hazardous to health when burnt with tobacco,
and it should be conform to what is mentioned in Gulf Standard

4.25 Lead and Cadmium content in cigarette tobacco shall not exceed 0.5
micrograms and 0.8 micrograms successively per cigarette.
4.26 The following characteristics shall be met in cigarette tobacco :
..26.1 The nicotine content shall not exceed 0.8 mg per cigarette.
4.26.2 The tar content shall not exceed 12 mg per cigarette.
4.26.3 The moisture content shall not exceed 0.5 mg per cigas'ette.
4.26.4 Hydrogen cyanide content shall not exceed 250 microgramme
per cigarette.
4.26.5 Carbon monoxide gas content shall not exceed 2.5%.
5. SAMPLING
,.1 The following shall be observed on sampling:
5.1.1 Samples shall be taken randomly.
5.1.2 Sampling containers shall be clean, dry and tightly closed.
5.1.3 A label shall be stuck on each sample container stating :

5.1.4 Samples shall be kept under conditions that do not affect on ____-
its characteristics until they are tested.
5.2 Sample size
The sample size shall be according to the following table:

5.3 Preparation of samples
5.3.1 A number of 900 cigarettes shall be taken at random from selected
containers, divided into 3 groups, each of 300 cigarettes
(one for the laboratory, the second for distributor and the third
as a reference sample), each group shall be put in clean and dry
receptacles and labelled as given in 5.1.3. The following tests
shall be carried out on the laboratory sample: Test for length
and circumference - loose shorts - density of tobacco and burning
quality. Provided that the test for loose shorts be conducted
f irst .
5.3.2 A number of 400 cigarettes shall be taken at random and divided
into two groups. of 200 cigarettes each, one as a laboratory
sample and the other as a reference sample.
The necessary tests shall be carried out on the laboratory
sample to ensure conformity of cigarettes and tobacco to the
characteristics of each and to determine moisture, nicotine,
tar, carbon monoxide, silica, ash, fine tobacco content,
additives and pesticides, and contaminated metallic elements.

6. METHODS OF EXAMINATION AND TEST

Necessary tests shall be carried out on the samples taken according
to item (5) to ensure conformity of the product items of this
standard in accordance with standards to be approved by the
Organization for the methods of test for tobacco and tobacco
products.
7. PACKAGING
7.1 Cigarettes shall be packed in suitable packets made from paper,
paper board, aluminium foils, tin or any other suitable material.
These packets shall be lined with foils from paper, tin, plastic
or any other material suitable to lining of these packets.
7.2 The packets shall be covered with cellophane foils or any other
materials to the same purpose. It shall be tightly tied around
the packet with a special ribbon to open the packet.
7.3 The covered packets shall be packed in suitable containers made from
paper, paper board or plastics. These containers shall be covered
with cellophane foils or its substances to keep cigarettes moisture.

8.8, Type of tobacco which represents the biggest ratio of
tobacco used in manufacturing of cigarettes and its ratio.
8.9 The following warning which indicates that smoking is
harmful to health. It shall be printed on the front side of
the packet in both Arabic and English languages, with a
letter size not less than 0.6, the colour of the packet or
letters shall not affect the clarity of the warning which
reads: "Health Warning: Smoking is the main cause for lung
cancer, lung diseases and for heart and arteries diseases".
9. TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE
Cigarettes shall be transported and stored at 22 ± 1°C and a
relative humidity of 60% + 2%.
