Following a presentation to Andreas Gembler and the Executive Committee,
the President has made the following request:
1. The issue of PM EEMA's credibility regarding responsible marketing
and juvenile integrity policies is the single most important question we
are dealing with right now.
Consequently each and every market should analyze what strategy should be
applied for the market in question, plus make it a key part of the Three
Year Corporate Affairs plan;
2. In the mail you will shortly receive copies of the overhead presentation
I made to AG. Pls note that where we offer examples of Juvenile initiatives
possible, e i educating the trade, educating teachers & parents or communi-
cating with minors, AG underlines that
- we should use the experience made in other markets (and we have it here
at HQ), but
- the final recommendation must be a market-specific recommendation, i e
we might even come up with strategies not yet tried at all;
3. Kindly note the a p p r o v a 1 p r o c e s s listed on the last
pages.
For instance, any brief to an outside agency, following relevant approvals
to start producing a Juvenile initiative, must have clearance before it is
shown to an outside agency or other 3rd party.
N 0 T E;
IT IS NOW CONFIRMED THAT THE US STARTS AN ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN OCTOBER 18th.
Of technical reasons some magazines might already hit newsstands around Octo-
ber 16th. - The first of the ads deals with M I N 0 R S.
The ad makes reference to US legislation and states in absolute & unambiguous
terms that selling tobacco to minors is illegal. - The campaign is backed
up by extensive information material to the trade, delivered by the sales
force.
We are working on getting you
1. an advance copy of the US ads;
2. examples of the US trade info material; and
3. copies of the US Q & A sheets.
In addition, Michael Parsons will work with potential EEMA specific ques-
tions that we should anticipate.
In the above light, may I once more repeat the need to-have local, legally
checked versions of the "A Global Commitment to Responsible Marketing", and
where it does not yet exist, translations of the PM Marketing Code. - It is
assumed that relevant staff in sales, marketing and field forces have read and
comprehended the material.
Your Area heads have received copies of the presentation October 10th.They

NEED WITH YOUR COUNTRY MANAGEMENT.
Where you need more copies of the English version, kindly contact Eva
Montgomery by Friday October 14th.
In case you decide to produce a local language translation to go with the
original leaflet, pls remember that you need local (alt HQ, where language
capabilities make it possible) clearance.
Finally, kindly check your CA files making sure you have the relevant
date available regarding studies opn juvenile smoking, the CRU study,
our PM Q&A etc.
We will need to get a conformation that you have the material alt need
more by the end of Monday October 17th.
