Highlights follow: ASH Executive Director John Banzhaf made a special presentation to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to further the concept of offering different health insurance rates for smokers and nonsmokers. ASH believes the suit brought against U.S. Tobacco by the mother of a 19-year-old who died from oral cancer avoids many of the problems of other suits brought by smokers against tobacco companies. ASH believes the suit could be won under at least three different legal theories. ASH claims R. J. Reynolds' ad is deceptive -- two authorities were quoted either out of context or in a misleading way. ASH encourages airline passengers to keep up the pressure for smoke-free flights. Dr. William Pollin, head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, claims that tobacco has far more addictive potential than either alcohol or heroin.
