Subject: DIVESTMENT - STA~°NFORD UNIVERSITY
Last month, we received a letter from Stanford University, indicating that
they were under pressure to consider divesting their tobacco stocks, but expressing a
preference for engaging in a dialogue with us on our marketing practices. Prior to
receiving that letter, I had had a conversation with the President of Stanford's
Board of Trustees, who is an old friend, and he advised me that there was no
possibility that Stanford would divest. However, he said they are under some
pressure to do something, and he and I both Qg"leed `hat opeiung a uialagae would
be the appropriate course of action.
Accordingly, I believe it is that conversation that led to the attached letter.
Jack Nelson and I have now prepared a reply which is attached hereto. My guess is
that this reply will lead to a further request for a meeting, which I would plan on
attending, along with someone from PM U.S.A.
