In order to explore the role of passive smoke exposure in the etiology of lung cancer, a 1:1 matched case-control study was conducted in Heilongjiang province from October 1 of 1993 to April 30 of 1994. Materials and Methods All of the 128 lung cancer cases collected for this investigation were confirmed by pathologic evaluation. The interview questionnaire included 11 items with 64 factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, indoor air pollution, history of benign lung disease, dietary factors, nutritional factors, income and general economic conditions, and family history of tumors. The programs of "epi info" and conditional logistic regression model were used for univariate and multivariate data analysis. Results In the multivariate conditional logistic regression model (adjusted for age, sex, vocation, education level, income, and previous years of smoking) passive smoke exposure, a major source of indoor air pollution, has been identified as a risk factor for lung cancer. Passive smoke exposure during childhood was associated with an OR of 7.8 (95% Cl: 3.1-19.8), and exposure during adulthood associated with an OR of 2.3 (95% Cl: 1.5-3.6). I
