I I I I I I I I I I I I I I PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS AND LUNG CANCER Yu Zheng-fene, Li Kang, Lu Bo, Hu Tian-ming and Liu Shu-qing Harbin Medical University, Harbin, China In order to explore the role of psychological factors in the etiology of lung cancer, a 1:1 matched case-control study was conducted in Heilongjiang province from October 1 of 1993 to April 30 of 1994. All of the 128 lung cancer cases collected for this investigation were confirmed by pathologic evaluation. The interview questionnaire included 11 items with 64 factors including smoking habits, alcohol consumption, indoor air pollution, history of benign lung disease, psychological factors, stress, dietary factors, nutritional factors, income and general economic conditions, and family history of tumors. The programs of "epi info" and conditional logistic regression model were used for univariate and multivariate data analysis. In the multivariate conditional logistic regression model (adjusted for age, sex, occupation, education level, income, and previous years of smoking) a close relationship was found between psychological factors, stress and lung cancer. The data showed that in introverts the OR for lung cancer was 1.97 (95% CI: 1.4-2.8), and, in relation to stress (as defined by frequency of life events), the OR for lung cancer was 3.2 (1.2-31.8). The significant life events associated with an elevated risk for lung cancer were the death of a family member (OR=4.77 95% CI: 1.97-11.51), unsuitable work (OR=5.49 95% CI: 1.21-5.28), conflict with boss (OR=5.49 95% CL• 1.49-20.11), difficulties with children's school or work (OR=2.41 95% CI: 1.36-4.29). Social support (OR=0.03 95% CI: 0.003-0.035) is a protective factor. N 00 s J 00 W O O I
