Jill Ditmire, co-anchor:
well, now it's the 'little guy' vs `big tobacco' in
the Marion County Court. Tomorrow a jury gets to decide
the outcome.
Richard Rogers died of lung cancer in 1987 after
smoking for fifty years. His family is suing four big
tobacco companies, charging their product as addictive.
Richard Rogers couldn't quit, even though he tried.
Their first suit ended last year in a hung jury. In
almost every case, tobacco companies have gotten off
without paying judgements. Why ...
Professor Orentlicher (Indiana University Purdue University
at Indianapolis): Back in the thirties and forties,
cigarettes were called cancer sticks, another nail in the
coffin; and everybody knew that. When you're sitting on
the jury, you know that the smoker probably knew what he or
she was getting into.
Ditmire: This story begins deliberating tomorrow
afternoon.
