Smokers Unite on the Web
The Great Smoking Debate has now entered the electronic
age. Anti-smokers have been using the World Wide Web to get
their messages out for some time, and now the country's major
smokers' groups now have sites of their own. Like all good
web sites, these feature "hyper-links" to other web sites.
(That means you can start at one site and visit others by
clicking on highlighted words that appear on your screen.)

People with computers and modems are gaining access to
vast amounts of information, finding out how they can join
forces with like-minded people, and participating in the
defense of adults' right to enjoy tobacco.
For example, the Friends of Tobacco site
(http://www.fujipub.com/fot/) includes ten pages of useful
data on the industry, compiled by the Tobacco Institute.
Suppose you're writing a letter to your°representative
in Congress and you'd like to mention a few specifics about
what the tobacco industry means to the economy. According to
the data available on the Friends of Tobacco site, the
federal government took in more than $5 billion in cigarette
excise taxes in 1995. And, according to an economic study
detailed on the site, the tobacco industry directly supported
more than 660,000 American jobs in 1994.
The Friends of Tobacco site also offers a hyperlink to
Fuji Publishing's colorful cigar page, which in turn offers
more than 200 hyperlinks to everything from cigar companies
to cigar vacations. -
Surfing the web can offer hours of fun and entire
libraries of information. Some other tobacco-related sites
