Tax
,
Federal and state taxes generated from the re-spending of
wages earned by tobacco industry employees in 1994 raised
$15 billion. This is more than the entire NASA budget in
FY1994.
In 1994, the United States federal government raised $22.7
billion either directly or indirectly through the tobacco
industry. This is nearly 90 percent of the total budget
for the entire food stamp program for the United States in
FY1994.
In 1994, all state and local governments raised $13 billion
either directly or indirectly through the tobacco industry.
This is more than all of the state and local governments
spent on recreational and cultural activities, twice as
much as they spent on sanitation, and twice as much as they
spent on economic development in FY1993.
During 1995, Philip Morris alone generated $9.3 billion in
federal and state taxes. This is larger than the entire
budgets of Oklahoma, Connecticut, Washington, Minnesota and
Michigan in FY1995.
