MANUSCRIPT CRfTERIA AND INFORMATION
These abridged instructions apply to all categories of manu-
saipts, inrluding letters to the editor and submissions to
special journal colurrmv.For complete instructions, see the
January 3, 1998, issue of TIIE doUlcxAL.
Send the manuscript with a cover letter to the Editor,
George D. Lundberg, MD, JAlVSA, 515 N State St, Chicago,
LL6061o. Manuscripts are considaredwith the understand-
inFthatthey have not been publlshed previously in print or
electronic format and are not under consideration by an-
other publication or electronic medium. A complete report
following presentatinn or publication of preliminary findings
elsewhere (eg, in, an abstract) can be considered. Include
copies of possibly duplicative material that hac been previ-
ously published or is currently being considered eLsewhere.l
Authors submittfng manuscripts or letters to the editor re-
garding adverse drug or medical device reactions, reportable
diseases, and the like should also report such to the relevant
government agency.

Group AuthopBfp.-If authorship is attributed to a group
(either solely orin addition to one ormare individual authors),
all members of the group must meet the fiill criteria and re-
quitetnents for authorship described in the following para-
graphs. One or more authors may take responsibility "for" a
group, in which case the other group members are not
authors, but may be listed in an ackmowledgment3
Authorship Requirements--With the cover letter include
(1) statement on authorsbip criteria and responsibility and
(2) statement on financial disclosuzc and (3) either the state-
ment on copyright oratatement on federal employment. Each
of these 3 statements must be read and signed by all authora!
(4) The corresponding anthor must sign the acknowledgment
statement.

who meet the JAMA criteria for authorship are listed as au-
thors, and all authors certify that they meet the following
criteiia: "I have participated sufficiently in the conception
and design of this work and the analysis of the data (when ap-

responsibi7ity forit. I believe the manuscript represents valid

Editorial peview and Pmcasaing
Peer Review. AII submitted manuscripts are reviewed
iniUaily by a JAMA editor. Those enanuscripts with fltaal$-
dent priority for publication are releeted promptly. Other
manuscripts are sent to expert consultants for peer review.
Peer reviewer ldentities are kept confidential. Anthar iden-
tities aie not kept con5dentiaL
The existence of alnanuscript underreviewis not revealed
to anyone other than peer reviewers and editorial staff. In-
formation from submitted manuscripts may be systemati-
¢ally, collected and analyzed as part of researthto improve the
