MINUTES OF CORESTA'S ETS SUB-GROUP MEETING
Hamburg, Germany
September 11, 1997

Introduction
Mike OGDEN welcomed participants to the half-day meeting. The 21 Sub-Group members present
signed the attendance list and received the agenda (attached as Appendix 1).
Ventilation Study Progress
For the restaurant indoor air quality survey, the participants discussed the next steps in
completing their
final report on the survey of 34 restaurants which has been conducted in six countries. The next
steps
involve data analysis, conclusions, and drafting of the final report. By November, there should be a
draft
of the following sections of the report for study participants to review: (1) Chemical methods - J-J
PIADE; (2) Questionnaires - Matthias SCHORP; (3) Ventilation - Hoy BOHANON; (4) Observational
Data - Hoy BOHANON; (5) Protocol - Yves SAINT-JALM. The objective is to have the final report
completed by June, 1998. As an aid to the laboratories participating in the collaborative study, J-J
PIADE agreed to look at some measures of within-lab variability for the chemical analytes determined
in
the restaurant study as an aid to identifying potential areas of improvement for any given analyte
in any
given lab.
Collaborative Study Progress
The list of participating laboratories was reviewed and all lab representati-v"es present indicated
their
continued willingness to participate. All labs were reminded that the proposed methods under study
had
been sent out in October, 1996 and the study could not proceed until all labs indicated their
readiness.
Mike OGDEN asked that all labs try to become ready for analysis by the end of October, 1997 and
indicate their status to him in a letter by that time.
Several technical details of the study design which were discussed at the spring meeting in Paris
were
revisited and the following resolutions were reached. (1) XAD tubes - the XAD tube:that will be used
for collecting nicotine and 3-EP is the new tube described in Paris (one section of XAD-4 resin in a
6-
mm od glass tube; part no. S2-0361 from SKC, Inc.). (2) Definition of RSP (respirable suspended
particles) - the previously described filter (Fluoropore PTFE 1-µm pore size, 37-mm diameter) will
be

used along with a cyclone which gives a mass median diameter cut-point of 4 p.m. (See later section
for
more discussion on the RSP definition.) (3) Sample collection - all samples will be collected in the
RJR
environmental chambers in Winston-Salem. Participants will only be responsible for sending the
necessary sampling materials to Mike OGDEN in advance of the final collaborative experiments and for
the laboratory analysis.
On this latter point, Michael INTORP made a presentation to the group outlining his understanding of
acceptable sampling procedures within ISO and the VDI. His conclusions were that (1) it would be
desirable to have all participants collect their own samples but that (2) it was recognized that the
performance of joint experiments was dependent on the practicality of technical and financial
concerns.
It was the agreement of the Sub-Group that involving all laboratories in the sample collection phase
of
the collaborative study would be technically and financially impractical, and that the
originally-devised
experimental plan should be acceptable to ISO.
Definition of RSP
In a continuation of the discussion held in Paris, there was discussion around what the definition
of
"respirable" should be in the context of respirable suspended particles (RSP). Two issues were
discussed: (1) should the particle size collection definition conform to the "respirable" convention
(or to
some other convention such as "thoracic" or "inhalable" or "high-risk respirable"; and (2) if the
"respirable" convention is used, what should the median cut-point diameter be. Mike OGDEN presented
a summary of "RSP and Other Particle Size Definitions in Member Countries of the CORESTA ETS
Sub-Group" which was based on information collected by the following volunteers: Korea (Moon Soo
RHEE); Germany (Gerhard SCHERER); Switzerland (Matthias SCHORP); UK (Barrie FROST); USA
(Katherine MAIOLO); Sweden (Jan ARNARP); Japan (Takuya ASAI); France (Yves SAINT-JALM);
and Spain (Joaquin SARABIA). Most of the countries surveyed had adopted particle size definitions
for
indoor andlor workplace air that are compatible with the ISO definition of "respirable"; i.e.,
median
particle size diameter cut-point of 4 lcm. Therefore, the Sub-Group agreed to proceed with the
originally-proposed definition of particles as "respirable". The sample collection systems that will
be
used in the collaborative experiments are compatible with the ISO definition of "respirable".
Next Meeting
It was agreed that the next full meeting of the Sub-Group would be held in the spring of 1998 in
Europe.
In the absence of any invitations received from prospective hosts before the end of the year, a
meeting
will be arranged on a "cost sharing" basis (similar to the 1996 meeting in Milan). Tentative dates
are
currently either the Ist or 2nd week of May, 1998. Details of the meeting place and time will be
mailed
to Sub-Group members in advance of that meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Michael W. Ogden, Convenor r'.) ~
