Exposure commenced at 8-14 weeks of age, Mice exposed once daily to smoke of either 30 High-Tar (I 6 nag) or Low-Tar (5 rag) over a period of 7-8 rain in Hamburg II Small Animal Smoking Machine for up to 30 weeks. Filtered cigarettes supplied by Australian Tobacco Research Foundation. Phagocytic and degradative properties of the liver and spleen as~ssed using unopsonized and opsonized radioactive sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) inoculated intravenously into na'~'ve or immume animals. RNDINGSIRESULTS: Initially phagocytosis of unopsonized SRBC was shown to be compromi~d in HT tobacco smoke exposed animals of both the BABL/c ,and C57Black strains, but not for :,he LT-exposed animals of the BABL/c strain, Later phagocytosis was also affected in some instances with oponized SRBC. Degradation of ph,qgocyt0md material did not appear to be compromimd until aft,er 18 weeks of chronic exposure. CONCLUSIONS: There was clear evidence of the C57Black st,rain of mice being more generally affected by tobacco smoke exposure than the BABL/c strain.
