A12LA JOENSON Chak, Advocacy Group - American Cancer Society, Minnesota Council Arla Johnson has been a volunteer witia the Americsa Cancer Society for 29 years, sezvu,g in several leadership roles, including Minnesota Division Chairman of the Board, Tobacco Control Subgxoap Chair and, atost recently, Chair of the Advocacy Group at the state level. She has represented ACS on Minnesota ASSIST's ,Exscu.tive Committee and is also a member of the ACS National Public Issues Coinmittee, w]yich deterrnines tobacco policy at the Congressional level. Johnson represents Minnesota on the National ACS Assembly, as well as the new ACS Midwest Division Board of Directors. Arla began her involvement in the tobacco control arena 20 years ago when she conducted ACS Quit Smoking prograzns for adults who aeeded help quitting. That experience led to tobacco control leadership responsibilitics at the ACS stste level and evcntually to her major role in ensuring passage of the 1992 Tobacco Free Schools Bill. She was actively involved in the long stxnggie to pass Mmnesota's Iandmark Youth Access to Tobacco bill, which became law in 1997. Last year Aria also helped pass a local youth access ordinance in her own part of the state. Johnson owned and man aged a retail business.for 14 years, supervising astaff of 8 to 10 employees, and has served on the Board of her local Cha.mher of Commerce. Johnson attended Mankato State UzLiversity and Metropolitaa State Universlty.

RICE Former Deputy Commissioner, Minnesota Depqstment oSHeaft Ms_ Rice held high level positions wirh the Minnesota Department of Health (MDI3) through 1997. As Deputy Commissioaer, Ms. Rice was second m cozamand at NIDH, rospamslble for regalation and policy over&ight of most MDH operations. Ms. Rice paid patticular attention to MDH lcgislative initiativcs during this time, as well as the representation of MDH as a board member with the Mmnesota Health Data Iastitute. Prior to becomfag Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Rice served as an Assistant Coazzmdssioner at NIDH. In that role, Ms. Rice managed the Bureau of Health Protcction, which divisions included disease prevention and control, environmentai health, aad public health laboratoiies. Ms. Rice's 1VIDH experience also mcluded a kwo-year stint as Director of Public and Legislative Af{airs. Ms. Rice received her BA frcm the University of Wisconsin in 1971.

She sits on the Bducati.on; Higher Education Finance; Fsnvironmental and Naturs.l Resources; Commerce, Tonrism and Consumer Affairs Ce®ziuttees, and also serves as Chair of the S'igher Fclucati.on Subcommittee on Refo=ra, and as Vice Chair of the Select Committee on Tec]m,ology. Deeply involved in her coiamunity, Representative Leppik is a long-iime asident of Qoldea Valley and a past member of Golden Valley's Planning Comwission, its Board of Zoning Appeals and its Civic Canter Task Force. Garrison and ALA asked Congzess and President Clisiton to scrap the inadequate deal pmscnted by the industry in 1997, and worked effectively with organizafions across the country to stzengthen federal tobacco legislation consideiEd in 1998. Prior to his work with the Lung Association, Ms. Gaziison served for moxe than a decade as President and Chief Execu.tive Offieer of the National Easter Seal Society. Dr. Hanson is the President and CEO of the Institute for Research and Education Health System Minnesota. He is also the ciment President of the Minnesota Coalition for a Smoke Free Society 2000, having seroed as its first and foundiug President in 1984. Duaing the 1980s and early 1990s Dr. Hanson lead the Mmnesota. Smoke Free Health Care project, and Dt_ Hanson served as President and Chair of the Smoke Free Generaii.on -1Vlinnesota effort from 1984 to 1990. He has been an advocate for tobacco control in many public policy fonum-% iaciuding regional health boards, organized medic9ne, and state and national leb slalive processes. Following his retiremen.t as Chancellor, Dr. Christenson accepted ann appointment as Dysiinguished Adjunct Professor at the University of St Thomas. She has served in sunilar roles at MedCeatezs and Patmers National Hesith Plan, and began her health policy career at Interstudy.
