And now, America's largest cigarette maker is testing one of them. Philip Morris hopes its new product will catch on. Our Newsbeat Consumer investigator Ruth Spencer is here to tell us more about how it works. Ruth ... Ruth Spencer reporting: Well, Devin, the cigarette is called "The Accord," and it's part of an electronic smoking system, really, that includes a cigarette holder and lighter in one that's about the size of my beeper here. You pop in the Philip Morris Accord cigarette, and you puff away without nearly as much smoke. Here it is, a micro-electronic cigarette holder and lighter that eliminates smoke and ashes from the end of, your cigarette. The only smoke visible comes from your mouth when you exhale after each puff. It's called ".The Accord," and; according to Philip Morris, it's just what smokers have been asking for. John Nelson (Philip Morris): Over the years, smokers have told us that they would prefer a cigarette that.had less lingering odor, less smoke around them, and less ashtray mess. Spencer: Only special Philip Morris brand low-tar low-nicotine cigarettes will fit into this device. They'll cost up to two dollars and seven cents a pack_ The cigarette holder, a battery charger, and a pack of Accord cigarettes will be sold in a starter kit for fifty dollars. The question is, will smokers want to bring this entire device up to their lips to inhale? The experts say young people may especially like this high-tech process and see other benefits. Right now, it's being test marketed in Japan and the United States. And, Philip Morris is hoping that it can show that The Accord will eliminate many of the harmful components of cigarette smoke by heating the tobacco at a lower temperature, but the critics say that's a claim the.
