Harold Greene, co-anchor:
A major tobacco company touts a new smokeless
cigarette.
Laura Diaz, co-anchor:
And stop us if you've:heard this one before--a
smokeless cigarette may be in the works. (Graphic:
"Smokeless?," device) Philip Morris is working on a new
device designed to fight second-hand smoke. It wraps around
the cigarette so the smoker is the only one inhaling.
For the past twenty ydars, John Roessler has been doing
this outside of his house to keep second-hand smoke away
from his family. Now Philip Morris may have invented a
device to bring him back inside. It's a computerized
lighter and smoke container, and he may buy it for his
family's health. (Visual: Roessler smoking; demonstration)
John Roessler (Smoker): It's not gonna help me at all, but
maybe my kids or somethin' like that.
Diaz: Philip Morris spent two hundred million dollars
developing the computerized smoke-catcher. A smoker inserts
a specially made cigarette and it only burns when a smoker
inhales. The device captures the fumes, at least those from
the tip. (Graphic: demonstration animation) But smokers
still have to breathe out.
Philip Morris is still testing to see if anyone will
pay fifty dollars for those shorter cigarettes and the
wraparound, the high-tech box. (Visual: cigarette pack,
demonstration) (Graphic: animation) They'll be good for a
pack or so before the smoker must recharge the battery and
remove the smoke waste with a portable catalytic converter..

The American Lung Association says the whole thing's
ridiculous. It may stop the second-hand smoke, but...
