That's what,it'll look like when smokers test a new smokeless cigarette system from Philip Morris. It's called Accord and the idea is to all but eliminate the second-hand smoke that bothers others in a carpool or at home. Richard Danard (Anti-Smoking Activist): It certainly indicates what- what smoking has come to. The leading tobacco company, which does everything it can to glamorize smoking for kids- get 'em to think it's cool and so forth- produces a- a contraption like this. Belmont: Anti-smoking activist Richard Danard.reacting to this morning's New York Times story.. Carol Ramos, anchor: Well, talking about technology and science and all of that, a beeper-like device that removes smoke and ashes from the end of a cigarette is now being tested by some smokers. Danard: Somebody who uses this thing has to be somebody who, I think, understands that he's hooked. He wants to- cause as little harm to the rest of the world as he can. Ramos: That's anti-tobacco advocate Richard Danard. The battery-operated device from Philip Morris would eliminate most second-hand smoke, but it would not cut down on the amount of tar and nicotine that the smoker inhales. Ken Minyard, co-host: What the smoker inhales, but the point about this is it would protect other people_ For a trideocassette(Tf9 or aurw cassattelradrol oft6isnewssegment contact yournearest YMS offi'ce. ~lfareiialaaopfdbrviJevrtlomtaRmlStKasmqaay0euteotarhraaarnx®w,eoe>ralrsrasmmh ~Onypntrkarim aMroaQcanarpabFeJsalaylarpmfaisfarb4a'az L0iZ0'd T9£SL06ZTZi 01 S660 L9b ZtiZ Z- S3-3JNH 50-1 SWfI ~U LO:IT L6. bZ 130

V(OEO MONITORING SERVICES OF AMERICA. LP Pagec 2 Ramos: Yeah, and so you've got all that smoke that's always coming off the cigarette. This would only allow the tobacco to burn when the smoker inhales. Peter Tilden, co-host: You know, I had a friend in high school- Minyard: What- when you inhale. In other words, inhales, he takes- he sucks on it,... Ramos: When he's sucking on it,... Minyard: ...takes a drag- Ramos: ...then it starts to burn, but when- Minyard: But does- does the smoke- Ramos: It doesn't come out. when he Minyard: Well, then that's our problem. Then we can eliminate all these laws_ We don't have- we can- we don't have to worry about people smoking next to us. Tilden: I can still smell it escaping from your nose. Minyard: You- you and Jackie. Tilden: You know what I'm thinking? Remember the kid in high school who could always shotgun it the other way, that puts the lit end in his mouth? That's how everybody should be forced to smoke a cigarette. Minyard: No, this is the answer to all of the squabbles that we're having right now. Absolutely. Well, let's get somebody from Sacramento on the line. Would this satisfy you? Ramos: Yeah, January 1st is coming up, and that's when.all.l the bars and all the taverns are gonna have to eliminate smoking under the new state law. Minyard: I want some more on that. Ramos: And on the subject of smoking, Philip Morris is ON testing a smokeless cigarette. It actually has a (VN beeper-like device on it that removes smoke and ashes from ® the end of the cigarette and cuts down on second-hand smoke. w N O Minyard: I just wanted to bring up- this was- this was N mentioned on Carol's news earlier this morning. VIDEO MONITORING SERVICES OF AMERICA, LP , Page: 3 . have- they being the Philip Morris people-... Captain Jorge, traffic reporter: Yes. Minyard: ...a smokeless cigarette. Jorge: Yeah, I heard that. Minyard: The New York Times is saying it ought to be available to smokers pretty soon actually. it has- it comes with a microelectronic holder. Unlike.regular cigarettes, the tobacco in the smokeless version, called the Accord, burns only when it is puffed. Jorge: Huh. Minyard: Now, do you light it? Did you get that you light it, Peter, or is it- burns when it's puffed- Tilden: Sounds like it. I don't know. I don't know. Minyard: But the Times says smokers must lift the entire device to their lips when they inhale. I need to see this thing before I can understand it. Tilden: it sounds like a hooded maybe- or.you get into an environment where you smoke. Minyard: You ride it, I don't know. Philip Morris says it will be great for smokers who now restrict their habit at home or in cars. It's not gonna help, by the way, the smoker at all. It.doesn't do a thing for you to help your health or anything like that. What it does do is prevent about ninety percent of the second-hand smoke, and I think that if the cigarette itself pleases the consumer, and therefore you can sell it, then it might really do the trick. I would, however, pass- then there's where you can go. You can pass a law saying those are the only types of cigarettes that are allowed in restaurants and bars and public buildings. Simp- and then you don't have to worry about it. If you want to smoke one of those, fine, you can smoke it here 'cause it's not gonna affect me. Tilden: And I say you should be able to smoke any cigarette you want, but just- remember how those kids showed up at school, they put the lit end in their mouth and shotgun it that way, they inhaled to show off? Minyard: That's the way your gonna do it just to keep it all inside. I suspect probably there would be, but I want to know why_ Does this work for you, if they could perfect this, would that be OK with you then... Tilden: It better. Minyard: _..if you were sitting next door- next booth to someone who was smoking? Tilden: No, I don't want any smoke. Minyard: Well, you don't have any smoke. Tilden: There's some smoke. Minyard: Oh, barely. Tilden: When the guy goes (breathes out) and it comes back out his nose,... Minyard: No. Tilden: ...that's smoke, even though it's filtered by his head_ Minyard: I don't know what happens to that smoke once he inhales it. Tilden: See, there's gonna be- you need to get a devi.ce for your nose. Minyard: I'm just reading what they say here. They say it removes ninety percent of the second-hand' smoke. Tilden: See,'well,. let's work on that other ten. it escapes through orifices- we need orifice filters. Minyard: See, you're a smoking Nazi. You.are a smoking Nazi. Tilden: Yes, I am. I quit and I just don't.wanna be bothered anymore_ Minyard: Yeah. Tilden: I quit 'cause my lungs are clean and I don't need my lungs filled up with your- it's- the crap that comes out of your nose. Minyard: No, that's the old argument- the old argument. You cannot- you can't use that. Once you remove the second-hand argument, *you have nothing to say about it. Tilden: If you- see, I'd like to see a guy inhale and then stuff clamps down on all orifices until the stuff is absorbed in his body, then it opens.again and then he takes another puff, so nothing comes out. Minyard: That's it. Peter is a smoking Nazi. Tilden: Don't use a Nazi reference. # # # L0i90"d T9£SL06ZTZT 01 5660 L9ib £tZ Z- S3TSJNd 50-1 SWfI NA 80:ZI L6, VZ 130
